Millard West High School is within walking distance
Families are attracted to this area for the highly rated Millard Public Schools district. Rohwer Elementary School is right in the neighborhood, and Millard West High — which Niche ranks as the seventh-best high school in Nebraska — sits on the other side of Q Street. “It was a newer school in the mid-’90s,” says Kelly Buscher, a former Millard West High teacher and current Realtor with NP Dodge Real Estate. “It was pretty far west, but it’s built up quite a bit around there now.” You can walk to the high school and its sports fields from any house in Hawthorne.
George Russell Middle School serves students in grades 6-8.

Hawthorne has well-maintained homes built in the late ’90s
Most houses in Hawthorne are New Traditional and Colonial Revival homes that were built in the late 1990s and early 2000s. “They’re pretty well kept up,” says Buscher, who has nine years of local experience. Homes typically have three or four bedrooms, along with spacious driveways and attached three-car garages that give you plenty of parking space. A few townhomes are available, too.
Well-manicured lawns help give the neighborhood its charm.
Several cul-de-sacs create a quiet suburban atmosphere.

The housing market compared to nearby Lake Shore
Prices start in the mid-$200,000s for townhomes. Contemporary, New Traditional and Colonial Revival detached single-family homes sell from the upper $200,000s to the upper $600,000s. If you buy property in an area with an HOA, like Hawthorne or Dickinson’s Landing, you’ll have to pay dues as well — typically around $100 to $300 per year. Properties tend to sell after about three weeks on the market, the same as in Lake Shore, the next neighborhood over. Lake Shore’s median sale price of $415,000 is a bit lower than Hawthorne’s median, and houses there are slightly older; most were built in the early ’90s.
Hawthorne’s quiet residential streets are lined with sidewalks
Hawthorne’s residential streets are laid out in a loose grid pattern with a few loops and cul-de-sacs. Sidewalks are well-maintained and the roads are pretty level, so it’s easy to get around on foot. There’s not much through-traffic, either, so the streets are quiet and bike-friendly. Residents rely on cars for travel outside the neighborhood, which is typical for Omaha. The commute to major employers in Downtown Omaha takes about 25 minutes.
Zorinsky Lake is a popular spot for walking, biking and fishing
Hawthorne Park is in the heart of the neighborhood, with a playground, picnic areas, paved trails, a basketball court, a playground and plenty of open space. You can also walk over to Lake Shore, where a walking path connects to the hiking trails around Zorinsky Lake. “It’s just a really pretty area — a big lake with a big walking trail — so people run, bike and walk around there,” Buscher says. The no-wake lake is also good for kayaking, canoeing and fishing.

DJ’s Dugout, a sports bar known for a huge selection of draft beer and pub grub
Javi’s Tacos, a casual Mexican joint
The shopping center is across the street from Millard West High, so it’s easy to swing over and pick up groceries or a quick bite after ball games.
Dickinson’s Landing HOA hosts neighborhood events
If you live in Dickinson’s Landing, you’ll be invited to social gatherings like neighborhood garage sales, Easter egg hunts and Fourth of July parades. The HOA also hosts a Party in the Park in September with music, food and games at Hawthorne Park.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
