A historic neighborhood named in honor of the human rights activist

Malcolm X is a historic neighborhood near downtown Omaha, named in honor of the human rights leader born here in 1925. "Malcolm X is a thriving and dynamic neighborhood. It has a unique mix of families who have lived here for generations, as well as newer residents who want to be close to the energy of downtown Omaha,” says Tina Sempeck, Realtor with eXp Realty. Located in the heart of the historic area often referred to simply as “north of Downtown,” Malcolm X is enjoying the fruits of its improving surroundings. Over the past 20 years, the City of Omaha has been upgrading nearby commercial areas, an effort that enhances both businesses and schools in the area.

Cottages and bungalows line narrow streets

Malcolm X homes line the gridded streets just west of Adams Park. Spacious front lawns provide a sparse suburban feel, while narrow, elm-shaded sidewalks offer walkability within the neighborhood. Though some homes have paved driveways, Many residents park along the street. “Homes really hold their value,” says Sempeck. “So, the neighborhood is considered a particularly smart investment.” Turn-of-the-century one- and two-story cottages, bungalows, and some mid-20th-century ranch-style homes are most common. Prices typically range from $80,000 to $170,000.

Making educational strides

Built in 1973, King Elementary was named in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., making it the first Omaha Public School named after a Black leader and activist. Located within the neighborhood, this school offers prekindergarten through fifth grade and scores a C-minus on Niche. Students can continue their education at Monroe Middle School, which also received a C-minus. Rated B-minus on Niche, Benson Magnet High School focuses on three Career Academies: Design and Construction, Business and Entrepreneurship and Health Professions. It also offers a strong athletic program, including tennis, baseball, softball, swimming and wrestling. Benson made news in 2023 by breaking ground on a $6.6 million, 10,000-square-foot construction project that will create a two-story healthcare center inside the school while simultaneously renovating the north entrance. This community clinic will provide healthcare resources for locals and experience for aspiring healthcare workers as they shadow professionals in the field. This ambitious project is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2024.
