Oakdale
From midcentury homes to contemporary customs
The first phase of Oakdale homes was built between 1945 and 1965 when many people were looking for well-located, new neighborhoods to raise their growing families. Homes were larger than those in many West Omaha midcentury neighborhoods, with most starting at 2,000 square feet. Today, many of those 1950s and 1960s ranch-style homes have been well-updated or significantly expanded. “Homes here are exceptionally well-maintained,” says Gillian Hanus, an Omaha native and experienced Realtor with Nebraska Realty for six years. “Few come on the market needing major overhauls. Homeowners here are very house proud, and updating their homes is a labor of love.” Elegant Colonial Revivals, large Cape Cods and custom-builds came on the market from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Smaller midcentury homes sell between $350,000 and $500,000, while large renovated vintage home sell between $600,000 and $1 million. JoAnn Wellsandt, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Ambassador Real Estate who's been selling homes for 30 years, mentions that the spring season is when the market tends to move fastest, especially for neighborhoods like Oakdale, where homes are meticulously well-kept.Highly rated schools near Oakdale

Students move on to Westside Middle, which gets an A rating alongside the proud distinction of being a National Junior Honor Society chapter. For the final step in basic education and with an overall A-minus, Westside High is not only ranked No. 7 out of 264 for Best Public High Schools in Nebraska by Niche, but it also has athletic teams that consistently win awards, including 131 Metro Conference Titles, 91 NSAA State Championships and 548 individual state championships. There are also several private schools in the area, including Mary Our Queen Catholic School and Omaha Baptist Academy. From expansive parks to Happy Hollow Country Club
Towl Park has 28 acres with a playground, picnic areas, a lagoon with stocked fishing, a baseball field, and basketball and tennis courts. Nearby Happy Hollow Country Club was founded in 1907 and is still a sought-after destination for golfers and competitive tennis players. Oakdale also offers several community recreational areas. “We’re very lucky to have Cryer Community Pool nearby,” Hanus says. “Not every neighborhood has a community pool, and it really helps give kids something fun to do during the summer.”Oakdale residents have both the essentials and unique finds
Oakdale is surrounded by large commercial areas, and a drive down West Center Road will lead residents to popular errand stops such as Aldi, Kohl's and Hy-Vee. Within walking distance for many residents is Rockbrook Village, a small shopping and dining area built into the northeast section of the residential area. It's filled with several local eateries, clothing boutiques and specialty shops. Don & Millie’s has been a local favorite since 1989, and their classic diner choices and gluten-free menu keep them particularly busy during lunchtime. Pasta Amore, serving in-house made pasta and choice selections of wine, is a go-to spot for evenings with friends. From Oakdale to downtown Omaha
Oakdale is bordered by the major thoroughfares of Interstate 80 and 680, and downtown Omaha is 10 miles west, accessible within 20 minutes. Residents are mainly car-dependent in Oakdale, but there are several bus stops along West Center Drive that connect to the main system in Omaha.
