A suburb tucked comfortably away in West Omaha
Walnut Ridge is a relatively new community joining others of its kind in West Omaha. The residential streets are packed with spacious homes, many within walking distance of local restaurants and shops. “The houses are established, but businesses do change hands because of high-dollar leases,” says Realtor Kate Reeker of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Despite the pressure of leasing in a prime location such as Walnut Ridge, these locally owned spots remain popular destinations along Route 64. On the neighborhood’s opposite corner, residents can walk to Elk Creek Park.

Several quality, locally owned restaurants just outside the community
Because Walnut Ridge is almost entirely residential, developed as the city grew west in the early 1990s, all nearby restaurants are just outside the neighborhood. As Reeker explains, the dining scene can be competitive. “That area has changed a little bit. One of them was a pizza place where they had a TV show complete a turnaround on it,” says Reeker. Those living on the east side can cross 156th Street to reach Khao Niao, a well-known, family-run Thai place. Down the block is Porky Butts BBQ, a casual joint. Homeowners on the south side have choices, too, just across Maple Road. The strip mall contains Stokin Goat and La Mesa Mexican Restaurant, rounding out the globally influenced dining scene. Grocery runs are equally within reach, as the Hy-Vee Grocery Store and Pharmacy share this parking lot.

Teens and adults might toss the football around in the park’s wide-open grassy field. The real draw for the area, however, is Flanagan Lake Park, a mile northwest. The park’s more than 700 acres are filled with trails for hiking and biking. At the lake, anglers can fish for bluegill, crappie and largemouth bass. There’s also a boat ramp on the lake’s south side.
