Oak Springs is a leafy neighborhood near downtown Orinda where there isn’t much traffic, allowing for easy walks around the neighborhood. The quiet streets go hand-in-hand with the small size of Orinda’s nearby downtown, which has a handful of shops and restaurants. “People don’t want a lot of traffic,” says Bathgate. “They don’t want fast-food restaurants or too much shopping.”
Oak Springs has lush tree coverage, and homes vary in style. There is a mix of architectural styles, such as Mediterranean Revival, contemporary, upscale ranch-style homes and cottages. Two- and four-bedroom properties sell for $980,000 to $1.6 million, while homes that have over 4,000 square feet can sell for up to $3.7 million. Homebuyers should know that Orinda Woods scores a 1 out of 10 on the CAP Crime Index, lower than the national average of 4.
The area is served by Orinda Union School District, which has an A-minus rating on Niche. Glorietta Elementary School and Orinda Intermediate School both have A ratings. Miramonte High School has an A-plus rating and after-school activities like filmmaking club, future skills club and robotics club.
Exercising in the neighborhood is a big part of life in Oak Springs. “It’s a walking neighborhood,” says Vlatka Bathgate, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker. “It’s easy to meet other people and their dogs.” The hills around Orinda are full of hiking trails, like the De Laveaga Trail, about 2 miles northwest. It leads further west into the Siesta Valley Recreation Area. The Lafayette Reservoir is about 5 miles east and has 10 miles of trails that loop around the water, which allows fishing and boating.
The Oak Springs Pool and Clubhouse is the neighborhood’s gathering hub. Along with its pool and clubhouse, there are picnic tables that overlook the pool. “That’s where most of the events happen,” says Bathgate. “People have gatherings, Fourth of July parties and a pancake breakfast.” The club requires a membership that’s only available to neighborhood residents, and most people in the area apply.
Downtown Orinda is less than half a mile from Oak Springs. The small area has a Safeway and a handful of restaurants and shops. Casa Orinda is an Italian restaurant known for its Old West-inspired décor, and Peet’s Coffee is a popular chain coffee shop that’s a hub for the Oak Springs social scene. “People meet at Peet’s every morning at 10 a.m.,” says Bathgate.
Route 24 runs along the neighborhood’s northwest side and provides access to the Bay Area. Orinda BART station, is just outside the neighborhood leads into San Francisco, Oakland and Walnut Creek. The Oakland International Airport is 18 miles away, and the Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation is just outside the neighborhood’s east side.
