North Orange
Loch Haven Park is a cultural centerpiece
The aesthetic and cultural centerpiece of North Orange is Loch Haven Park, a 45-acre recreational area nestled between three lakes and featuring several museums and theaters. “It’s a center for arts and culture, and there are just so many beautiful areas in such a centralized place,” says Warriner. The Orlando Museum of Art provides Central Florida’s premier visual and educational experience with a rotating collection of exhibits enhanced through tours, lectures and studio classes. The Mennello Museum of Art features a smaller collection in the Howard Phillips House. Though it is best known for its sculpture garden, a venue that hosts weekly yoga classes, it is also home to several festivals and community events, including a monthly "After Hours" social gathering. The Orlando Science Center is a hands-on educational facility that offers interactive exhibits, workshops and a STEM Discovery Center among four floors of attractions. The Orlando Shakespeare Theater produces classic and contemporary plays for all ages, while the Orlando Repertory Theater caters to a younger audience and offers a youth academy. The park hosts the annual Fringe Festival, a 14-day celebration of artistic expression that features independent and non-traditional theatrical performers from around the world.
Shop, eat and drink in trendy Ivanhoe Village
Just south of Loch Haven Park is Ivanhoe Village, a buzzy district centered around Virginia Drive. Among the district’s collection of quirky businesses is Rock & Roll Heaven, a well-known vintage record store Popular eateries include the fine-dining waterfront experiences of Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe and The Pinery. Santiago’s Bodega is known for its tapas-style dishes and drink specials. “They have a phenomenal happy hour,” says Amanda Wood, a Realtor with Re/Max Exclusive Collection, “but it only lasts about 30 minutes, so you have to be quick!” GB Bottle Shop & Tasting Bar caters to the casual drinker and “beer geek” alike. Dedicated nightlife options include Savoy Orlando, an energetic bar that is a favorite of the LGBT+ community. On the other side of Loch Haven Park is the sprawling AdventHealth Orlando medical campus. Special services include a cancer institute, a center for pain management and a children’s facility.Attractive mix of housing offers something for everyone
Housing in North Orange is equally diverse. From small colorful custom homes to large modern-style homes and the variety of ranch-style homes in between, the neighborhood offers something for everyone. The architectural diversity is especially noticeable around Lake Formosa. Uniquely designed condominiums and contemporary townhouses provide alternative housing options. “It’s one of the older established neighborhoods, so you have homes from as far back as the early 1900s,” says Warriner. “But you also have lots of new construction because people want to be close to downtown. From a developer’s standpoint, it makes so much sense to purchase property and build a gorgeous new home in a super desirable, convenient location.” Single-family home prices range from $400,000 to about $1 million. Multi-family housing typically ranges from the low $400,000s to the mid-$600,000s. Central Florida is hot and humid in the summer and dry and temperate in the winter. Homeowners should be aware that wind damage can be a risk during hurricane season. However, flooding is not typically a concern.Orange County Public Schools is rated A-minus by Niche
The district is served by Orange County Public Schools, a district that earns an A-minus from Niche. Florida offers school choice, so zoning does not necessarily determine which school a student attends. But in general, kids on the northside can attend Killarney Elementary and College Park Middle, both of which are rated C-plus by Niche, and Edgewater High School, which earns a B. Students to the south can attend Audubon Park K-8, rated A-minus, and Edgewater High. For those looking for a private alternative, The Park Maitland School serves students in first through fifth grades. In addition, nearby Lake Highland Preparatory School is the largest private school in Orlando and the fourth largest in the state. It's rated A-plus by Niche.Buses, I-4 and SunRail make it easy to get around
Bus stops are concentrated on North Orange Avenue and Minnesota Avenue. Interstate 4, which leads directly to Downtown Orlando and further south to attractions such as Disney World, forms the neighborhood’s west side. A SunRail commuter line runs right through the neighborhood, too. “A lot of people want to live in the area because it’s so easy to navigate,” Wood says. Orlando’s historic Amtrak station is located just south of downtown, and it's a 20-mile drive to Orlando International Airport.
