A history of Hollywood glamour
Once home to the iconic Palm Springs Racquet Club, an exclusive mid-20th century celebrity hotspot where Marilyn Monroe was discovered after being photographed poolside, Racquet Club West is still one of the most sought-after neighborhoods among Palm Springs homebuyers. And while the original racquet club no longer stands, the neighborhood's star-studded reputation remains.
Today, Racquet Club West is best known for its collection of midcentury modern architecture and its quiet residential streets. And while buyers can still find plenty of luxury residences once occupied by movie stars and socialites, the neighborhood now offers more affordable home options that appeal to a broader clientele that includes retirees, young professionals and families. “There is a real friendliness here," says Palm Springs resident John White. While the neighborhood's concentration midcentury modern architecture makes it look straight out of the '50s and '60s, White notes that the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere also makes it feel that way, harkening back to a time where neighbors knew all of their neighbors.
Located a few miles north of Downtown Palm Springs near the base of Mount San Jacinto, Racquet Club West offers residents scenic views of the desert peaks and easy access to the city’s livelier and more urbanized core.

An eclectic collection of midcentury and modern architecture
Racquet Club West has a diverse array of architecture from throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. While home styles vary significantly, buyers can find many of the iconic midcentury modern homes that Palm Spring is known for, along with ranch-style homes and bungalows with Spanish influence built between the 1930s and present-day. Homes with modern architecture have also been built within the past few years, along with 21st-century takes on the midcentury modern style. Regardless of the age of the home, most have private swimming pools. Because the neighborhood is home to quite a few seasonal residents as well as full-timers, many opt to rent instead.Because a fully renovated midcentury modern home can go for top dollar, pricing here often depends more on the level of updating than it does on size. “A lot of the homes that may have fallen into disrepair are being renovated and brought back to their original glory,” White says. “The people who own these homes there take pride in what they have and are invested in seeing them be restored and appreciated as they should be.” Single-family homes with anywhere from 1,300 to over 3,500 square feet range from the mid-$700,000s to nearly $2 million, depending on the floor plan and level of updating, though there are plenty of fixer-uppers that go for less. Homes that were once occupied by celebrity figures also have an increased value.Buyers can also find quite a few condominiums. Modest 1980s and 1990s apartment-style units under 600 square feet with one bedroom and one bathroom start at around $155,000 and range to roughly $230,000. Luxury condos built in the 1970s next to the former racquet club have private yards and midcentury modern architecture. Floor plans range from 500 to over 2,000 square feet, and pricing ranges from about $300,000 to $900,000 depending on the size and level of updating.

Palm Canyon Drive borders the neighborhood to the west and puts residents less than a mile from popular area eateries. Palmina By Puglia is a local favorite for Italian, while Boozehounds is a trendy go-to for brunch and cocktails, with a special dog menu for four-legged residents. Dogs are also frequent visitors of 4Paws Coffee Co., which serves specialty lattes and breakfast sandwiches (in addition to pup cups!).Palm Canyon Drive is also home to Haus of Re[x] and ModernWay, each selling midcentury modern furniture and decor. This thoroughfare leads directly to downtown a few miles south, where there are plenty of additional eateries, along with independent boutiques, high-end designer stores to vintage clothing shops.
