Ranch-style homes and bungalows from the late 20th and early 21st century
Residential development began here largely in the 1970s and continued until the early 2000s, when growth slowed down for a couple of decades. Shaded here and there by cypress and oak trees, the sidewalk-less residential streets have been repaired many times over, with visibly patched cracks. Throughout most of the community, three-bedroom traditional ranch-style homes and bungalows sit on small fenced-in lots and feature prominent two-car garages and simple, vinyl-sided exteriors; some properties have rooftop solar panels. Prices typically range from $350,000 to $550,000, depending on lot size and how well the home has been maintained. “What really draws people out to Shandon is the affordability,” says Karlie Montgomery, broker and Realtor with Luxton Real Estate. “And there’s a new development where you can get acre lots for not a whole lot compared to elsewhere in the area.” New construction on the east side began in 2020 with three-bedroom new traditional homes with earth-tone stucco exteriors on acre lots that are sometimes used for vegetable gardens or keeping livestock. Prices for these newer homes range from $650,000 to $850,000, largely depending on lot size.
Community pools and athletic courts at C.W. Clarke Park
Named after the estate that gifted the land, Crawford W. Clarke Memorial Park, or C.W. Clarke Park for short, is dotted with mature oak trees, featuring small and large play structures, as well as a volleyball court and half-sized basketball court. Locals can also visit the community pool on the park’s east side, which has a second wading pool for young kids. There aren’t any other parks or trails in the vicinity, but the Shandon branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast organizes activities and programming for local kids, including arts and craft projects at the local library and Career Week presentations from the Paso Robles Fire Department.Shandon Joint Unified District schools within the town
Located on the neighborhood's south side, local kids attend Shandon Elementary School, rated C-minus by Niche, from kindergarten through Grade 8. Shandon High is right next door and scores a C-plus; students here can join the basketball, volleyball or the school’s chapter of Future Farmers of America, which aims to prepare its members for careers and leadership roles in agriculture.Connecting to surrounding areas on California Route 46
The community is bordered north by California Route 46, which leads 17 miles west to Paso Robles, and 90 miles east to Bakersfield. Centre Street is Shandon's main throughway. “Towns like San Miguel have easy access on and off the 101, but out there in Shandon, transit options are very limited,” Montgomery says. Though residents don’t have any public transit options, the village is small enough that they can get around easily on a bike or by foot. Adventist Health Twin Cities is the nearest hospital, 25 miles away in Templeton. San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is 52 miles southwest, while Fresno Yosemite International is 101 miles northeast.Going to Paso Robles for shopping and dining
There isn’t any commercial development in Shandon aside from two small corner grocery markets: La Salsa Market and Shandon Market Liquor & Deli. Community gathering spaces include the Shandon Public Library and Chapel Hill, a privately owned Catholic Church surrounded by grapevines atop a steep hill north of Shandon with panoramic views. The property is usually closed to the public and opens for Sunday morning mass every week in its Spanish Mission-style chapel. Locals venture 17 miles west to Paso Robles when they want to eat out at a restaurant or go shopping. There, they can visit Bronco Burger, a casual eatery with outdoor picnic tables, or head to Fish Gaucho downtown, which serves Mexican food and craft cocktails with a rustic wooden interior.
