Subdivided and stacked with Pflugerville amenities
Part Pflugerville, part Travis County, the robust neighborhood of East Pecan is found immediately southeast of a growing downtown. The neighborhood harmoniously conjoins portions of it that are among Pflugerville's longest established suburbs with much newer master-planned subdivisions and commercial developments. In this regard, East Pecan offers pretty much everything that Pflugerville is known for, including a growing inventory of homes, well-regarded schools, commercial developments and, of course, parks galore. Yet the harmonious connections between these fixtures wouldn't be possible if not for Pflugerville's network of hike and bike paths, which is why some people call Pflugerville the "trail capital of Texas."
"People travel from all over to visit our county parks," says Joe Sibley, parks manager for Northeast Metropolitan Park. "We get people from Round Rock. We get people from Dallas. We get people from San Antonio. Depending on what they're playing in, whether it's a soccer league or a baseball league, we have people that drive from other areas of Austin to come to Pflugerville just because of the park."

Established neighborhoods and newly constructed subdivisions
Although all homes in the area use a Pflugerville address, only the westernmost portions of East Pecan belong to Pflugerville. The eastern half, which comprises the subdivisions of Lisso and Boulder Ridge, belongs to Travis County. The Pflugerville side is far more established than the Travis County side, with most homes in the western section having been built in the 1980s. These include an array of stacked stone ranchers with attached garages, mostly selling for between $300,000 and $500,000. Over in the Travis County sections of East Pecan, newly built subdivisions have helped modernize the area with a dense collection of modern traditional homes. These tend to sell for between $425,000 and $550,000. However, a section of Boulder Ridge also includes numerous manufactured homes, which typically begin at $50,000.

Miles of trails connect with Northeast Metropolitan Park
In a region known by some for its miles of hiking and biking trails, Pflugerville sits near the top for its miles of trails, several of which converge in East Pecan. This includes cut-through paths and greenways that connect residential areas with nearby amenities like schools and parks. The Pecan Park Greenway can be used to reach other trails in Pflugerville, like the Heritage Loop Trail, or parks like Northeast Metropolitan Park. Easily the most popular recreational area in the neighborhood, Northeast Metropolitan Park is distinguished for its list of unique amenities, including a competition BMX track, a cricket field and a splash pad. "The pickleball courts get used daily. Tennis gets used daily. People walk their dogs daily. They use the concrete trails daily," Sibley says. "All of our park, pretty much in a consistent manner, gets used for every aspect that it has." If the skatepark at Northeast Metropolitan Park is full, there is an additional option roughly 3 miles west at the current Pflugerville Rec Center, which also includes an indoor running track, gymnasium and "Pfitness" room. Although some residents of master-planned subdivisions, like Boulder Ridge, are content to work out in their private amenity centers.

Downtown East reaches closer to home
East Pecan is a quick trip away from Pflugerville's downtown, which the city is preparing to expand eastward across TX-685, bringing nightlife and daytime businesses even closer to the neighborhood. "On the 32 acres at the northwest corner of Pecan Street and 685, there's going to be a new development called Downtown East," says Terri Toledo, interim executive director for the Pflugerville Economic Development Corporation. "We're really creating a community gathering space that's going to expand our downtown further to the east, and we're breaking ground on the City Hall and the recreation center in 2025." Currently, there is plenty of entertainment and amenities downtown, including a H-E-B grocery store directly adjacent to the proposed Downtown East site. Further west, downtown bars and restaurants like Hanovers Draught Haus attract a dedicated evening crowd of beer tasters and live music fans. Back in the neighborhood, the Creekside at Dessau shopping center offers a list of restaurants closer to home, including Vietnamese and Mexican options. Before diners head home, Cranky Granny's Sweet Rolls beckons those with a sweet tooth with its long menu of inventive cinnamon roll flavors such as churro, cookies & cream, and peach cobbler.

Morning walks to Pflugerville Elementary
Some young students walk to school in the morning, crossing Immanuel Road or using neighborhood cut-through paths to reach Pflugerville Elementary, which has a Niche score of B-plus. The next step is Bohls Middle School – the district's newest school, which opened in January of 2022. Because it is so new, Bohls Middle does not have a Niche score yet, but it does earn a 6-out-of-10 rating from GreatSchools. The last step is Weiss High School, which is rated B-minus.

Pfetch a Ride to Amazon and other employers nearby
Pflugerville does not have public transit, although its trails make up for that by offering alternative ways to get around. Pretty soon, cyclists and runners will be able to travel even further from Pflugerville without a car. "We're putting in a concrete trail system that's going to go all the way from South Austin to North Austin," Sibley says. "People will be able to ride all the way from the southeast and come all the way to North Austin and Pflugerville on a trail system that connects all of our parks." Still, many residents are car-dependent, commuting every day to jobs in Pflugerville, like PepsiCo and Amazon, or further away to employment hotspots like Tech Ridge or Southeast Austin. If they don't own a car, reduced rate rideshare options through the "Pfetch a Ride" program can help residents get anywhere within Pflugerville city limits.
Deustchen Pfest and inclusive triathalons
Some HOAs in East Pecan host events throughout the year, including an annual block party in Boulder Ridge. Sports league competitions and other public events are also held at Northeast Metropolitan Park, including a junior rodeo and adaptive triathlon for athletes with cognitive and physical disabilities. "The activity happening here is a consistent thing," Sibley says. "We have groups that host anything from dog training to exercise classes and workout groups. We recently had a 'skate-a-thon', where a group came out and did a community event at the skate park." But Pflugerville's downtown is where the largest and most attended annual events in town occur, such as Deutschen Pfest, which celebrates the town's German pedigree with all the trappings of Oktoberfest, like polka dances, bratwursts and craft beer trucks.
Things to consider
The most consistent factor residents deal with is noise and traffic as a result of all the residential construction that is still ongoing, which will only continue as the Downtown East project accelerates. But there are other environmental factors to consider too. Along the course of Gilleland Creek are some flood zones. This primarily affects homes on Gatlinburg Drive, and some throughout East Pecan's newer subdivisions. Homeowners living in these areas might be required to purchase a flood insurance policy. Additionally, there is some risk of wildfires throughout Pflugerville. The City of Austin Fire Department's Wildfire Division considers the area of East Pecan to have an elevated risk of surface fires.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
