North Mountain Village residents are spoiled for recreational choices. Resting alongside North Mountain and about 10 miles north of downtown Phoenix, the neighborhood has access to miles of trails for spotting javelinas and roadrunners, taking sunrise hikes with panoramic views or mountain biking through desert valleys. Nearby city parks, golf courses and a small amusement park provide even more to do. Throughout the neighborhood, privacy fences and brick walls surround yards with palm, citrus and palo verde trees. Driveways are lined with prickly pear and ocotillo for low-maintenance gardening. Residents can find restaurants, wine bars and grocery stores within a short drive of their home. The area is also convenient for commuters, with a park-and-ride light rail stop on Dunlap Avenue.
Phoenix Mountain Preserve and Cave Creek Park
North Mountain is part of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, a chain of mountains and buttes connected by about 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. Thanks to the efforts of four nonprofits that worked to preserve this urban wilderness area from development, locals have nature in their backyard. Shaw Butte Trail, a 4-mile loop beginning at the North Mountain Visitor’s Center, offers a 360-degree view of area mountains at its highest point, and mountain bikers can wind through the valleys on the 10-mile Charles M. Christiansen Memorial Trail. Birdwatchers can look for red-tailed hawks and great horned owls along the 1.2-mile Maxine Lakin Nature Trail. Hiking and biking are not the area’s only recreation, however. Families enjoy the roller coasters and splash park at Castles N’ Coasters, just north of Dunlap Avenue. Cave Creek Park has a disc golf course and a lighted basketball court. There are also three nearby golf courses, ranging from Lookout Mountain Golf Club’s award-winning 18-hole course to the nine holes at Palo Verde Golf Course. “Palo Verde is perfect for when you want a quick round of golf,” says Rodney Coty, Realtor for Launch Powered by Compass, who has sold homes in the area for 24 years. “You can just pull up and jump on the course, and it’s fairly priced.”

North Mountain Village offers homes for every budget
Buyers can find an extremely diverse selection of residential listings in North Mountain Village. “Many houses in the area have been around since the 1940s and are undergoing renovation,” Coty says. “It’s one of the most affordable locations within the city, and the school district is in high demand.” Manufactured homes are available beginning under $100,000, and condos often list between $200,000 and $400,000. The majority of site-built single-family residences are ranch-style, Mediterranean-inspired or Pueblo Revival. Median prices fall in the mid-$300,000 to the $500,000s; some have in-ground pools and yards thoughtfully landscaped with ocotillo and other native desert species. On the high end, custom hillside homes with views of the valley and a blend of contemporary and Pueblo-style architecture may run for $2 million or more.

Astronomy nights at the North Mountain Visitor Center
The North Mountain Visitor Center hosts astronomy nights periodically, and on the third Saturday of every month, they have a free coffee and live music night. For larger-scale gatherings, there are events downtown almost every month of the year, including the Maricopa County Fair in April, NASCAR Championship Weekend in March and the Arizona Renaissance Festival sometime between February and April each year.

Great restaurants and shopping can be found in the downtown Phoenix area, but it can also be nice to find options closer to home. Locals can sip sangrias and nibble wood-fired tapas on the patio of Timo on Central. Bobby Q and Little Miss BBQ offer two nearby spots to get smoked meats. The Vig, a popular Phoenix chain, has a location along Central Avenue. They serve American and Mexican comfort foods and have a shaded, private patio for savoring a lazy Saturday brunch or dinner with family. Nearby grocery stores include Sprouts Farmers Market, Fry’s Food and Drug and a Walmart Neighborhood Market. Those who enjoy vintage shopping can browse the selections at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall.

Sunnyslope High School is a draw for homebuyers
The neighborhood falls within the Washington Elementary School District, which covers kindergarten through eighth grades. The school district, as a whole, receives a B-minus Niche score. The district has many schools in the area, and zoned options vary greatly. Two of the zoned schools for residents in this community are Lakeview Elementary School, rated a C-plus and Richard E. Miller Elementary School, which gets a C. Parents have the option to apply to out-of-zone schools as well, and if space allows, their child can attend. The same situation exists for middle schools. Cholla Middle School and Royal Palm Middle School both teach some North Mountain Village children; Cholla has a score of B-minus on Niche, and Royal Palm earns a C-plus. Cholla students may participate in interscholastic sports and gifted programs, and Royal Palm offers before and after-school tutoring for students who want additional support or advanced studies classes for those seeking an extra challenge.
High schoolers may attend schools within the Glendale Union High School District, which has an A-minus Niche score. One of the options is A-rated Sunnyslope High School, which Coty calls “a very sought-after school.” College-bound students at Sunnyslope can get a jump start on college credits with Advanced Placement courses and can participate in extracurricular offerings such as badminton, the German Honor Society or the air rifle team.

Several transportation options for North Mountain Village residents
It’s a straight shot to downtown via Seventh Street or Central Avenue. Locals who don’t wish to drive downtown, however, can park at the corner of North 19th and West Dunlap avenues and ride the Valley Metro Rail. It runs through downtown Phoenix, goes past the University of Arizona and stops at 44th Street, where there’s a shuttle to the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It continues on to spots in Tempe and Mesa; the service runs seven days a week, from about 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. There are also buses that pass through the neighborhood along 15th and Peoria avenues, from 4 a.m. to almost 1 a.m. on weekdays, with reduced hours on weekends. The airport is approximately 14 miles south; it offers direct flights to 26 international destinations and over 120 domestic ones.

Environmental considerations
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has determined that the Phoenix area is at a significant risk for the following hazards: hail, heat waves, lightning, strong winds and wildfires. Each summer, the Department of Forestry and Fire Management's Phoenix Crew works to protect the city from potential wildfires, which are most common between May and August. In August and September, monsoon rains decrease the risk of fires.
