Why choose Chartiers, a settled West End neighborhood
Chartiers, also called Chartiers City, is a quiet, residential neighborhood in the West End of Pittsburgh. Its blocks of lower-cost single-family houses are home to a close-knit community that maintains an active civic organization and youth football association. You can easily walk to an updated neighborhood park or take a short Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus ride to the Crafton-Ingram Shopping Center. It's only a little farther to reach downtown Pittsburgh or other Steel City hubs like the Mall at Robinson and Pittsburgh International Airport.
Types and costs of homes compared to the rest of the West End
“Chartiers is a pretty in-demand neighborhood,” says Chris Ivory, a Realtor with Keller Williams who’s specialized in the Pittsburgh market for 36 years. “You’re going to find diverse and different homes. It’s not just old stock that’s over 100 years old. You’ll also see newer split-levels and ranches.” Sidewalks line Chartiers Avenue, disappearing into side streets full of National homes from the early 20th century and classic midcentury designs like bi-levels and ranch-style houses. Prices for move-in-ready homes range from around $60,000 to the upper $100,000s.
Chartiers has a median single-family home price in the lower $100,000s. It's slightly lower than the median housing costs in nearby Sheraden, Crafton Heights and Windgap, but higher than the median in Esplen.
Bi-level homes have attached garages for secure parking in the neighborhood.
Chartiers is nestled between rolling, forested hills.

Close to Chartiers and McGonigle parks
Chartiers is tucked between two of the city’s neighborhood parks. “Right on Chartiers Avenue, they just put a good amount of money into that park,” Ivory says. Chartiers Park reopened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in 2023, where families got to explore the new spray park, playground equipment and winding walking paths built on the sloping green space. The park’s multi-purpose athletic field often hosts football games for the Westside Mustang Youth Athletic Association. McGonigle Park is down a hill along the east side of Chartiers, home to an older playground, a couple of basketball courts and a baseball field.

Driving to Crafton-Ingram and Robinson shopping
Chartiers is about 2 miles from the Crafton-Ingram Shopping Center, a plaza of mom-and-pop and chain businesses. You can find plenty of places to eat or go shopping there, including:
Hanlon’s Cafe, a cozy homestyle diner
Pizza Palermo, a takeout favorite for Italian staples and hoagies
Giant Eagle, a popular Pittsburgh-area grocery store
Busy Beaver, a hub for home improvement projects
Crafton Ingram Lanes, a nostalgic place to go bowling
You’re also about 8 miles from The Mall at Robinson, a large indoor shopping mall surrounded by big-box retailers and strip malls.
Watching out for neighbors and joining local organizations
“It’s a neighborhood where the community sucks you in,” says Mary Ellen Barbour Williams, a longtime Chartiers resident who raised her family in the area. “No one gets left out. Your neighbors want to get to know you and keep an eye on the kids playing down the street.” Beyond a general know-your-neighbor vibe, Chartiers is also kept connected by its local organizations. Neighbors get together to cheer on the Westside Mustangs during their games, and the Windgap-Chartiers City Civic Club hosts monthly meetings to discuss issues that impact its two represented neighborhoods and plan community events.
