Settled suburban enclave overlooking Chartiers Creek
Sometimes called Chartiers City, the quiet, suburban streets of Chartiers have been home to generations of close-knit community. “It’s a neighborhood where the community sucks you in,” says Mary Ellen Barbour Williams, a longtime resident who raised her family in the area. “No one gets left out. Your neighbors want to get to know you and keep an eye on the kids playing down the street.” Positioned between two parks and several shopping and commuter hubs, Chartiers provides a sense of local community within easy reach of downtown Pittsburgh.

Quiet suburban streets and mixed architecture
Narrow residential streets branch from Chartiers Avenue, home to a mix of single-family styles from the early 1900s through the 1960s. Older homes like national style gable-fronts and classic American Foursquares sell for $36,000 to $150,000 depending on lot size and rehabilitation needs. Classic single-family styles like bilevels, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes often sit over attached garages, selling for $100,000 to $225,000. “People take pride in their yards, seeing people get out and cut the grass or plant flowers motivates everyone to keep things up,” Barbour Williams says. Streets are lined by mature pine and deciduous trees, grassy front yards and the occasional street-parked car, as well as spotty systems of sidewalks near busier roads.
Bi-level homes have attached garages for secure parking in the neighborhood.

Pittsburgh commutes and Port Authority buses
Chartiers Avenue bisects the area, running through Sheraden toward the Ohio River. “Once you get on West Carson Street, you can get onto East Carson and anywhere you want in Pittsburgh, no highways, no byways, no nothing,” Barbour Wiliams says. Downtown Pittsburgh is a 5-mile drive from Chartiers, and Port Authority bus service can be accessed at stops along Chartiers Avenue.

Between Chartiers Playground and McGonigle Park
Chartiers Playground is a longtime community staple which experienced extensive renovations in 2023. Home to a large, grassy field used for games ranging from football to soccer, the park’s newest additions are a brightly painted, tree-shaded splash pad sitting downhill from an updated playground. On the opposite side of Chartiers, McGonigle Park spreads down a slope toward an overlook of Chartiers Creek past playgrounds, park benches, a paved basketball court and a baseball field.
