A living time capsule
The skyline of Plymouth, Connecticut, is not overwhelmingly impressive. The town has just over 11,000 residents, and it’s not a major hub of commerce. There are no towering office buildings downtown, nothing to rival downtown New Haven 30 miles to the south. But there is one architectural feature in Plymouth that is both hard to miss and historically significant: the First Congregational Church steeple. Standing sentry over Plymouth Green, the steeple houses one of three tower clocks made by renowned clockmaker Eli Terry. “It’s the last surviving clock with Eli Terry-made works, and the gears and parts are made of wood,” says Matt Malley, president of the Plymouth Historical Society. “And it still works.” What the Plymouth skyline lacks in size, it more than makes up for in historical quality.
In a sense, that clock is a perfect metaphor for Plymouth, because this is a quintessentially timeless New England town, With sites dating back to the Revolutionary War, a bevy of museums showcasing the area’s history and a rural setting reminiscent of days gone by, Plymouth is something of a living time capsule. “Plymouth’s big draw is its history,” says Malley. But those who think that history is all there is to Plymouth – those who think it’s just a fun place to spend an afternoon – are missing out on the area’s abundant amenities, community atmosphere and comparative affordability.

So much to do, so little time
Given the rural nature of Plymouth, perhaps not surprisingly there are plenty of outdoor spaces for residents to enjoy. “I enjoyed the rural flavor of the town,” says Malley, himself a former long-time resident who grew up in Plymouth. “There’s room to do things and be outside. You can go camping in the woods, things like that.” Miles of hiking trails wind their way through the forested areas of Plymouth, including 10 miles of the Connecticut Forest and Park Association’s Blue Trail system. Additionally, more than 900 acres of the Mattatuck State Forest lie within Plymouth, providing opportunities for hunting, birdwatching and hiking. A lesser-known hidden gem is the Town Forest, a 53-acre woodland with a mile-long trail winding through it.
On the east side of town sits the former site of a factory built by Eli Terry, he of clockmaking fame, and there remains a dam that was built to supply power to his factory. The dam, known as Horseshoe Falls, is best viewed from the bridge named for one of Plymouth’s other famous former residents, Ted Knight, he of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Caddyshack” fame. Speaking of famous folks, Willy Wonka, he of candy-making fame, advised Veruca Salt during the famous tour of the chocolate factory, “Time is a precious thing. Never waste it.” Of course, spending a little time relaxing is also time well spent, and when that time is spent lounging on the grass of Plymouth Green, it’s time well spent with a view of the famous Eli Terry clock. For those who want to be slightly more active, the Terryville High School Disc Golf Course is open to the public whenever school is not in session, offering nine challenging holes covering about 1250 yards. And to get more of a bird’s eye view of the town, Adventure Balloon Rides offers guided flights in a hot air balloon over Litchfield Hills and the Connecticut River Valley areas.
Back on terra firma, Plymouth’s history comes alive at the Plymouth Historical Society, which maintains a toll house and a residential home – both from the 19th century – as separate museums filled with artifacts from Plymouth’s past. A water wheel that powered a factory in the 1800s is on the National Register of Historic Places, and sits near the Lock Museum of America, with fascinating displays of locks from all over the world, including some that are more than 500 years old. And the Terryville Fairgrounds is the site of several events throughout the year, including the Terryville Flea Market, a Volkswagon car show, the July Tractor Pull and the annual Halloween gathering, but the marquee event is the annual Terryville Lions Club Fair, held annually on the fourth week of August.
Plymouth is the hometown of actor Ted Knight, famous for roles in the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Caddyshack.

Making time to eat and shop
All that activity can lead to hunger, and residents here love to gather at Eagles Nest, a community gathering spot where locals sit down to hearty breakfast or lunch and catch up with friends and neighbors. With Adams Hometown Market located on the north end of town, residents don’t have to go too far to stock up on groceries. For home necessities, Walmart is about 10 miles south in Waterbury, which is also home to Brass Mill Center, where shoppers can find retailers like Burlington, T. J. Maxx and Barnes & Noble.
