Architecturally interesting homes are found throughout the Blackstone neighborhood.
Storybook Tudor homes and brick estates
Blackstone has a storybook village feel, with its Tudor homes, brick colonials and lush park stretching along the main boulevard. This designated historic neighborhood has pristine front lawns and intimate streetscapes where neighbors can walk to cafes and cocktail bars. People buy olive loaf and Vermont cheddar bread from the local bakery, and at night slurp ramen noodles and eat bao buns at an Asian eatery. Leisurely afternoons are spent strolling down the paved pathway at Blackstone Boulevard Park under the protection of big shady trees.
Many homes in Blackstone have delightful front porches.
Fairy tale roadways, green lawns
Blackstone developed in the late 19th century along the Seekonk River. Today, it’s considered one of the most desirable and architecturally significant parts of gritty Providence. Tudor mansions and brick colonials give Blackstone a hint of fairy tale whimsy. Ranch-style houses with stone walkups and contemporary builds sit near each other behind well-kept green lawns with bushes and shrubs. Stone walls and shuttered windows are typical accoutrements, and houses tend to have driveways and street parking. Prices in Blackstone range from $480,000 to $3 million.
Blackstone Boulevard Park offers trails perfect for walking, or exercising with pets.
Two-mile long leafy park in the median
The neighborhood’s main thoroughfare is Blackstone Boulevard, which runs on its east side near healthcare facilities and the Swan Point Cemetery. Blackstone Boulevard Park, created after the removal of trolley tracks in the mid-1900s, sits in the median. On warm days, the park is filled with joggers, dog walkers and other visitors soaking up the outdoors. Outdoor concerts happen in the summertime at the stone Blackstone Boulevard Trolley Shelter. The Seekonk River is Blackstone’s eastern border; neighbors can use the waterway to fish at Baileys Cove, or hike alongside it via the Swan Point River Trail.
Farmers sell their goods at the Lippitt Memorial Park farmers market in the summertime and enjoy the park’s fountain and walking paths. Shaped like a Christmas tree, an art installation called the Hummingbird Palace gives Lippitt Park a sense of whimsy. The Swan Point Cemetery, home to the gravesite of H.P. Lovecraft, gives it a sense of mystery. About 30 gardeners plant fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs at the Sessions Street Community Garden.
Hope street is a local hot spot for residents to enjoy shopping.
Fresh-baked bread, sourdough and olive loaves
Blackstone is known primarily for its architecture and natural beauty, but it also has a handful of colorful local merchants. It’s home to the original location of Seven Stars Bakery, a Providence institution. Bread is popular here, specifically loaves of sourdough and focaccia. Ramen is the go-to at Wara Wara, a neighborhood haunt with dim lighting and paper lanterns. People get Cambodian food to-go from Apsara Palace, or they dine in one of the restaurant’s red leather booths. Supermarkets like Whole Foods Market and Stop & Shop sit less than 2 miles away.
Residents in Blackstone enjoy the Lippett Park Fountain.
Where to meet your neighbors
Dwares Jewish Community Center is a gathering spot for all Blackstone neighbors. The center has a pool and an indoor fitness facility, plus group fitness and sports like pickleball. Arts classes in subjects like film and pottery exist here, and the Rhode Island Jewish Historical Association has a collection of books, photographs, paintings and more.
Every August on Hope Street, which forms the west side of Blackstone, neighbors attend the Hope Street Spring Block Party. The block party features live music, exciting vendors, and gourmet treats from local eateries.
