Mount Hope
Historic homes and condos on hilly blocks
Blocks lined by sidewalks, mature trees and saplings, street-parked cars and a colorful blend of historic homes built from the mid-1800s through early 1900s run down hills and long, flat stretches throughout Mount Hope. “There’s a nice collection of older single-family and multi-family homes,” Shawcross says. “A lot of clapboard architecture with porches.” Simpler clapboard homes and National forms on small lots stand down the street from larger, more ornate homes with influences ranging from Victorian to Dutch Revival, selling for $315,000 to $1.3 million depending on square footage, renovation levels and lot size. Condos in two- or three-story historic homes and a couple of larger complexes sell for $215,000 to $519,000. About 75% of Mount Hope residents are renters rather than homeowners.Storefronts from Hope Street to I-95
A handful of restaurants and larger shopping centers provide options for shopping and dining both within Mount Hope and just outside the neighborhood. “On Camp Street we’ve got a poke restaurant and the Oak Bakeshop coffee shop. We’re also less than a mile from the stores on Hope Street,” Shawcross says. Just north of Rochambeau Avenue, Hope Village shops and restaurants provide blocks of options beyond trendy raw fish bowls and Jewish pastries. The commercial offerings along North Main Street range from KFC to auto parts dealers, running south toward a strip mall anchored by Whole Foods and Petco. Across the bridge over I-95, locals shop for essentials at Stop & Shop, Walmart and The Home Depot in a more industrial commercial district.Billy Taylor Park and the YMCA
Named in memory of a community member beloved for his youth advocacy, the Billy Taylor Park houses basketball courts, a playground and splashpad on its sloping grounds. Residents get into the park at the Camp Street entrance, or head straight to the courts via a footbridge overhanging Cypress Street. Locals can take classes and use the fitness equipment and pool at the East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA. A few churches and a small synagogue provide religious services throughout the neighborhood.Events at Billy Taylor Park
Events hosted by local community groups and public officials are frequently held at Billy Taylor Park, including seasonal celebrations like Trunk-or-Treat. Each summer, in honor of the park’s namesake, the Billy Taylor Days Festival brings the community together for an afternoon of live music and catching up with old friends under the sun. Nearby, green thumbs tend plots at the Mount Hope Community Garden.Nearby Providence Public Schools
While attendance is based on a lottery system, kids may attend school close to home at Martin Luther King Elementary School which earns a C-minus on Niche, Nathan Bishop Middle School which earns a C and Hope High School which earns a C-minus. Hope High’s 2023 auditorium update is one of several district projects aiming to revitalize the amenities available to Providence Public School students.Downtown Providence and College Hill commutes
Commuters have a 2-mile drive into downtown Providence via Main Street or I-95, and RIPTA bus service is available along Main Street and Hope Street. The amenities of College Hill, including Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, are a little over a mile away down blocks lined by sidewalks and spotty bike lanes.
