Washington Park hosts 1930s homes in a range of styles
Washington Park has a grid of residential city streets lined with mid-20th-century homes on small lots. “It’s super diverse. A lot of young people look here who can’t afford the Armory District,” says Jane Driver, an associate broker with Residential Properties Limited who has served Providence for 24 years. There is a range of architectural variety for homebuyers to choose from — single-family bungalows and Colonial Revivals are priced between $275,000 and $400,000, and multi-family properties on the market for $500,000. A renovated Queen Anne home costs about $550,000.
Go out for burritos and margaritas from Casa Azul Taquería
“Providence maintains an independent, entrepreneurial spirit, so residents prefer to support local restaurants in the area,” says Jim DeRentis, a Realtor with Residential Properties Limited and a fourth-generation Providence native. Casa Azul Taquería serves Mexican favorites like birria tacos and margaritas, while Brass Monkey is an elevated sports bar and grill serving wings and nachos. A couple of small family-owned grocery stores, like Nuñez Fruit Market, serve the neighborhood, and residents can travel 2 miles south to shop at larger supermarkets like Shaw’s. There aren’t retail stores in Washington Park, but the neighborhood is 3 miles from Downtown Providence, which hosts a variety of shopping opportunities.
Thousands of carved pumpkins line the walkways at the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular
Providence residents enjoy free entry to the Roger Williams Park Zoo and the museum and planetarium on the first Saturday of every month. The community also gathers for seasonal events— the zoo hosts the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular in October and the Holiday Lights Spectacular in November and December. The neighborhood can also explore the arts and culture across the city at venues like the Providence Performing Arts Center or attend close-knit community events at the Washington Park Library. The public library hosts recurring meetings, including a knitting circle, a bilingual story hour with stories in Spanish and English and a board game club.
Learning in Providence
Students are zoned to the Providence School District, which offers school choice. Children may begin at Alan Shawn Feinstein Elementary, which has a C-minus grade from Niche. Students may advance to C-minus-rated Roger Williams Middle and finish at the Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex, which has yet to be rated by Niche. High school students can get involved by joining sports teams or contributing to the JSEC Cavalier Chronicle, the school's newspaper. “Providence is known for its academic institutions. On the culinary side, there’s Johnson and Wales University,” DeRentis says. The university’s Harborside campus, which houses its culinary program, is along the neighborhood’s southern border.
Stroll along scenic walking trails at Roger Williams Park
Columbia Park is in the middle of the neighborhood and offers a small playground and basketball court for pick-up games. Residents can enjoy riverfront views on the walkways around the Save the Bay Center, a non-profit organization that offers a living classroom and marine science programs. Just over Washington Park’s western edge is the city’s largest park. Roger William Park is a 427-acre outdoor space with nature trails, a bike park and ball fields. Residents can explore the Roger Williams Park Zoo and the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium or stroll through the Japanese Garden, which blooms with light pink cherry blossoms in the spring.Ride the RIPTA to Downtown Providence
Sidewalk-lined streets allow locals to walk to nearby restaurants and amenities, and bus stops operated by the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority are peppered throughout the neighborhood. Driving personal vehicles is common; U.S. Route 1 bisects Washington Park and Interstate 95 runs along the neighborhood’s northwestern edge.
Washington Park hosts industrial plants and commercial businesses
Locals live along organized residential streets, but the portside section of the neighborhood hosts several manufacturing facilities and industrial plants. There is also a commercial section with office buildings and businesses in the northern part of Washington Park.
