Homes in Country Oaks
Most neighborhood homes are in Country Oaks. Its long winding streets and cul-de-sacs give a secluded feeling, despite being bordered by highways to the west and south. "When I've had people looking in neighboring communities, I'll show them Country Oaks because they can get the same house for less money because it's closer to the interstate," says Cadorin. Grassy front and backyards shaded by large oaks and pines give added privacy and line the streets with greenery. Mediterranean-inspired tile roofs and stucco exteriors are prominent throughout the community, but ranch-style and bi-level homes can also be found. Smaller, single-level ranch-style and Mediterranean-inspired homes range from $200,000 to $350,000. Large Mediterranean Revivals on spacious lots with enough room for a pool range can cost $400,000 to $500,000. Outside of Country Oaks, a few lanes of homes extend off Hawley Road on the neighborhood's east side. These ranch-style homes are spaced out on lots of up to half an acre. They range from $200,000 to over $400,000.Close to Raley's and 3 miles to Mt. Shasta Mall
One of Midway's main conveniences is all the shopping nearby. Lake Boulevard Plaza is just 2 miles away, and it has a Raley's for groceries and eateries like Kampai Sushi. From the Hearth Kitchen and Pie Shop has a location about a mile south of the neighborhood. This regional chain serves soups, sandwiches and pies like salted caramel apple and blueberry lemon. Mt. Shasta Mall — the city's largest shopping center — is just 3 miles down I-5. This shopping center has pretty much anything residents could need. The main indoor mall has dozens of outlets and fashion retailers like Macy's. Around the mall are Target and Walmart for department shopping, Trader Joe's and Sprouts Farmers Market for specialty goods, Home Depot for projects and many other stores.Gateway Unified School District
Multiple school districts meet in this part of the city. Midway is part of the Gateway Unified School District, which is rated a B-minus overall by Niche. Students go to Shasta Lake School, graded a C-plus, for kindergarten through eighth grade. They round out their education at Central Valley High, rated a B-plus. Central Valley's core mission is to ensure that students are college-ready. Students follow a four-year process with their counselor that plans out what requirements they need to meet and what assessments to take to ensure they're prepped for applications.Take Interstate 5 to Hilltop or downtown
Interstate 5 runs along the neighborhood's west side. Residents can take I-5 just over 4 miles south to Hilltop, the city's industrial center. They can also drive 5 miles southwest to Downtown Redding. Those who don't wish to drive can catch the bus on Collyer Drive and Hawley Road. The closest major city, Sacramento, is about 165 miles south on I-5, but folks can also fly to major West Coast cities from Redding Regional Airport. Redding Regional offers flights to Los Angeles, Burbank, San Francisco and Seattle.Mitigating the spread of wildfires
Redding's dry climate and high temperatures make the summertime prime fire season. Most are small brush fires in the surrounding hills, but they can grow into large wildfires when not contained. The 2018 Carr Fire was the most recent large fire, burning many homes in west Redding and Shasta County. Midway is a few miles east of where the damage occurred. Still, the city encourages all residents to mitigate the growth of fires by removing combustible brush and materials from the perimeter of homes and communities to create a defensible space. It's also crucial to have a planned evacuation route in the event of a fire.Short drive to parks and Lema Ranch walking trails
Between Country Oaks and Hawley Road, there are a few acres of tree-studded natural space with dirt walking trails that residents can easily access. Northridge Gardens Park is a more suburban recreation space, less than a mile north in the Northridge Gardens subdivision. It has a bit of lawn space and a playground. The Boulder Creek Bridge Trail is just south of the neighborhood, across state Route 299. The 2-mile trail runs through a small nature preserve. Most of the trail is dirt, but the section closest to 299 has been recently paved for easier bike access. For more extensive hiking, residents drive 3 miles down to Lema Ranch. This 200-acre nature preserve has 4 miles of dirt, gravel and paved trails. They take walkers through fields of native grasses and patches of oaks and manzanita shrubs. Come July and August, temperatures can average around 100 degrees, so folks can cool off at WaterWorks Park, a small waterpark 2 miles west of the neighborhood.Bethel Church just south of the neighborhood
Bethel Church is just south of the neighborhood, across state Route 299. This church has a sprawling campus and 11,000 members. Roads around the neighborhood can become crowded around the church's four Sunday services.
