Hilltop/Montalvin comprises several subdivisions, including Montalvin Manor, which features rows and rows of midcentury houses on a traditional, flat, sidewalk-lined street grid. A walk-through displays the community’s abundance of two- to three-bedroom flat-roofed ranch-style homes and the occasional two-story residence, most of which were built in the 1950s. Across Atlas Road lies curving residential streets centered around Richmond Country Club. This area offers modern Mediterranean Revivals primarily built in the early 2000s with spacious interiors and small front and back yards. Some new construction houses have begun to crop up as well. Montalvin Manor K-8 and Pinole Valley High
Students can attend nearby Montalvin Manor K-8, a public elementary and middle school where teachers specialize in literacy and applied mathematics. In 2020, voters in the West Contra Costa Unified School District approved a bond measure that included funding for the construction of several new classrooms. Students can also attend Pinole Valley High School, the only high school in the district that allows them the opportunity to participate in the rigorous International Baccalaureate Program. Point Pinole Regional Park
Neighborhood residents have convenient access to community parks, trails and the magnificent Point Pinole Regional Park, a 2,300-acre green space with beaches, marshes and an explosive history. Point Pinole is the former site of the Giant Powder Company, a dynamite manufacturing plant that operated there until 1960. Little remains of the factories that once dotted the horizon, but folks can still have a blast at the park’s playground, picnic tables, waterside trails or fishing pier. Point Pinole Regional Park is also intersected by the San Francisco Bay Trail, a regional pedestrian pathway that spans more than 350 miles throughout the Bay Area. Outdoor activities closer to home include several community parks nestled along residential streets, such as Montalvin Park, Bay Vista Park and Waverly Playground. Downtown San Franciso is a little less than 25 miles southwest of Hilltop/Montalvin and only about a mile-and-a-half from Interstate 80.
