Brookbury's historic roots and natural surroundings
Brookbury is a quiet, established neighborhood in South Richmond with tree-shaded properties lining its residential streets. The area's history traces back to the 1800s, when it was a collection of farms and wooded lots. One of Richmond's oldest homes, a brick dwelling dating to around 1811, still stands on what was once Brookbury Farm. Today the neighborhood is primarily single-family homes built after 1950, with large lots and mature trees giving it an almost-rural atmosphere while still within the Richmond city limits. The businesses of Broad Rock Boulevard lie just outside the community, along with several spacious recreation areas. Downtown Richmond is around 7 miles north.
A diverse housing scene blends new and old
The neighborhood features a diverse housing scene, with 1960s ranch-style homes and split-levels sitting around the corner from modern traditional and craftsman homes built between 2000 and 2024. You can find homes with more land compared to surrounding neighborhoods, with some properties reaching over an acre. Homes start in the low $300,000s and reach the mid-$500,000s, with price tags increasing alongside square footage and lot size. “There’s not a lot of inventory in the neighborhood,” says Joie Boykins, a Broker with eXp Realty who has represented real estate transactions in the area for more than two decades. “Brookbury is one of those neighborhoods where people buy and stay for a long time.” With a median of around $420,000, Brookbury tends to be more expensive than surrounding neighborhoods like Cottrell Farms and Piney Knolls, which have respective medians of $270,000 and $300,000.
