East End
Suburban Neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia
Richmond City County 23223
Midcentury ranch-style homes on the edges of Fairfield Court
Much of the neighborhood is made up of the Fairfield Court affordable housing complex, though a few single-family homes can be found on the furthest edges of the area. Sidewalks stretch along the wide residential streets, with mid-1900s ranch-style houses and cottages that feature some fenced-in yards and others that overflow with hedges. The average home size is about 1,000 square feet, which is below the national average. There are a few newer constructions, with extra room and a premium price tag, but most houses were built in the 1950s and ‘60s. "The market tends to stay pretty consistent here, with not many sales compared to other parts of the city, Dieterly says. "There tend to be a lot of long-term residents living in the area. I find it to be one of the more affordable areas of the city to buy a home in when a home does hit the market though." Recent home sales and listings have ranged from $160,000 to a little over $200,000. The neighborhood's CAP Index crime score is 8 out of 10, which is higher than the national score of 4.Woodville Public Pool and other recreation
The public Woodville Pool, just south of the East End community, is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Residents can swim for free, and Richmond's parks and recreation department offers no-cost learn-to-swim classes as well. The Hidden Creek Park and Recreation Center rests about a mile north. This wooded green space has walking paths, pickleball courts and covered picnic areas. The indoor multipurpose room is also a convenient space for family or community gatherings, and kids can explore the wooden play structure outside. Unique to the park is its memorial to the Shuttle Challenger Crew, a quiet space for reflection and remembrance.Close walk to Fairfield Court Elementary and free after-school programs
Kids in East End can attend Richmond Public Schools, a district that offers school choice and some specialty schools. East End children are zoned for Fairfield Court Elementary, which is just steps from many East End homes and holds a C-minus rating from Niche. In 2023, Fairfield switched to the RPS200 program, which added 20 days to the academic calendar to boost students' progress. Middle schoolers can attend C-minus-rated Martin Luther King Jr. Middle, which offers a STEM Academy. Armstrong High also earns a C-minus. Nearby private options include the Anna Julia Cooper School, an Episcopal elementary and middle school. Anna Julia Cooper offers full scholarships to all students but only accepts residents of Richmond's East End.The Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond, located next to Fairfield Court Elementary, provides free after-school and summer career exploration and STEM programs to high school students. First-grade through 12th-grade students can head to Peter Paul RVA, a few blocks from the East End, which also has a free after-school academy and summer program.
Taking the sidewalks to school, riding GRTC buses around Richmond
Greater Richmond Transit Company, or GRTC, buses make stops throughout the East End, connecting riders to destinations all around the metro area. The entrance to Interstate 64 is just north of the neighborhood, and from there, drivers can quickly connect to downtown or the Richmond International Airport. Sidewalks line the community, Dieterly says, enabling families to walk their children to Fairfield Court Elementary School or the Woodville Pool.Shopping along Mechanicsville Turnpike
Restaurant options are a short drive from the East End. Less than a mile west, along the Mechanicsville Turnpike, Shawarma Express serves subs and shawarma wraps. Folks can satisfy their seafood cravings at Stuart’s Fresh Catch, an unpretentious counter-service joint. Aside from the fresh lake trout and jumbo crabs it’s best known for; locals love the spoonbread. Other chain restaurants can be found further up and down the Turnpike. Davinci's — which specializes in pizza and wings — is around 1 mile southwest. Dieterly says residents can shop at New Grand Mart on Mechanicsville Turnpike or at The Market at 25th Street. The Market offers van service for those without transportation. The historic neighborhood of Church Hill lies less than 2 miles south. It's home to hip eateries and parks with scenic views of the city.
