Huguenot

Midcentury homes with enough yard space for games and parties
Colonial Revival, split-level and ranch-style houses built in the 1960s and 70s line Huguenot’s curved, shaded roads. Lots are typically large and grassy, with enough room for a backyard barbecue. Sprawling properties on Cherokee Road back up to the James River, often with upscale features like tennis courts, movie theaters and large back decks. There are man-made lakes throughout the neighborhood, and some homes back up to them. Most houses in the neighborhood run in the $350,000 to $800,000 range, depending on the size, age and condition. Riverfront properties on Cherokee Road can reach into the millions. There are also a few condos available, and these units typically range in price from $245,000 to $450,000.Richmond Public Schools and private options in the neighborhood
Huguenot is zoned for Richmond Public Schools. JB Fisher Elementary, which is in the neighborhood, gets a B from Niche. Lucille M. Brown Middle and Huguenot High School get C’s from Niche. Huguenot has 20 athletic teams, and the school’s 2024 relay team won the regional championship. Two private Episcopal schools in the neighborhood earn A-plus grades from Niche. St. Michael's Episcopal School educates kindergarteners to 8th-grade students, while Trinity Episcopal School teaches 8th-graders through high school seniors.Riverfront parks and Virginia Powerboat Association
Huguenot is near many of the South Side’s riverfront parks. Residents stroll through Pony Pasture and Huguenot Flatwater as water rushes over rocks on the James River. The Virginia Power Boat Association, a private boat club, is just down Cherokee Road. Members cruise around and dock their boats in slips here, where the water is deeper and calmer than downstream near Bosher’s Dam. 106-acre Lewis G. Laurus Park is just outside the neighborhood. Here, walking trails weave past mature oak and pine trees. “In my opinion, it’s one of the most underutilized parks in the city,” Hester says.Plentiful shopping plazas and dining options in multiple directions
Huguenot has convenient access to shopping and dining in Richmond and Chesterfield County. The neighborhood’s Stony Point Shopping Center has a Trader Joe’s grocery store, Good Foods Grocery health foods store, Gelati Celesti ice cream shop and a few other restaurants. Just outside the neighborhood is Stony Point Mall, an open-air shopping center with high-end stores like Sax Fifth Avenue and Brooks Brothers, as well as upscale eateries like Latitude Seafood Co. Richmond. “When Stony Point was being developed, residents spoke up about wanting to maintain separation,” Hester says. “They didn’t want the neighborhood [of Huguenot] to be a cut-through, but you can still get there with relative ease.” Residents are also close to restaurants in the Bon Air area, including Joe’s Inn Bon Air, the second location of Richmond’s mainstay corner eatery in The Fan. The Shops at Stratford Hills and the surrounding stores, where there’s a Target, Publix, Walmart Supercenter and Lowe’s Home Improvement, are about 4 miles northeast. About 4 miles in the other direction is Chesterfield Towne Center, an indoor mall with retailers like Macy’s, TJ Maxx, H&M and Barnes & Noble. Surrounding the mall, there’s a Costco Wholesale, Home Depot and AMC Dine-in Midlothian 10 movie theatre.Nearby access to Powhite Parkway and the greater Richmond area
“Huguenot is in an amazing location,” says Teresa Melton, Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “You have easy access to downtown, you’re close to the James River, and you can get anywhere in the greater area in 20 minutes, at most.” Because of its curving, narrow streets and lack of sidewalks, Huguenot is a car-dependent neighborhood. Just outside the neighborhood, there’s an entrance to Chippenham Parkway, which connects to Powhite Parkway, a roadway leading toward downtown Richmond. On Oldfield Drive and Evansway Lane, there are Greater Richmond Transit Company bus stops, traveling to nearby areas. For air travel, the Richmond International Airport is about 20 miles away.
