Cozy blocks of suburban homes line streets shaded by leafy oak trees. Homes typically feature well-maintained lawns and a mix of residences with driveways and guaranteed street parking. The neighborhood's residences are architecturally consistent: brick exteriors with slate or shingled roofing in a variety of styles, from Colonial revivals and Cape Cods to bungalows and ranch-style houses. New developments are bringing some contemporary-style condos to the area. Prices vary depending on location; homes south of Patterson Avenue tend to be more expensive than on the north side. Residents can walk to Libbie and Grove Avenue, but getting around town is dependent on automobiles and local thoroughfares. The Greater Richmond Transit Company has bus stops along most of the community's major streets. Libbie Avenue runs north to south, while Grove Avenue, Patterson Avenue, and North Thompson Street run east to west through Westhampton. The University of Richmond campus and St. Mary's Hospital are within two miles of the neighborhood. Westhampton's small-town charm is evident in its retail district, alive with locally owned restaurants and boutiques along Libbie Avenue and Grove Avenue, locally dubbed "the Avenues." Pet owners can shop for toys and treats at For the Love of Pete. Right next door is Apothec, an aromatherapy store that also sells bath products and hosts classes on herbalism and related topics. Residents can pick up groceries from the Libbie Market and Cafe. The market was the previous location of the Ukrop family's specialty store. It was saved by a local campaign just as it was about to close. After a name change and the addition of a cafe, the market has become a favorite place for locals to shop and dine.Patrons can start the day with a cup of coffee on the patio at Grit Coffee. Craft brews and unique burgers are on the menu at Jack Browns Beer & Burger Joint on Grove Avenue. Just down the street is Beijing on Grove, a modern gastropub dishing out Cantonese dishes and a selection of craft cocktails. Elevated American fare is served in a warm and retro-themed dining room at The Continental Westhampton. Along Patterson Avenue is Pearl's Bake Shoppe, known for its colorful array of cupcakes and made-to-order wedding cakes.
