A pastoral hometown 10 miles from downtown New Orleans

River Ridge was once full of chicken farms and considered the backwoods of New Orleans, even though it's just 10 miles from the downtown area. When Airline Highway was built in the 1940s, it developed residential sections and other suburban amenities, including a neighborhood school and designated shopping areas. The enclave still maintains a pastoral nature, with homes having generous space around them and plenty of open, verdant areas between residential areas. "It's more rural than urban and lends itself perfectly to families," says Realtor Cheryl Eaton of Realty One Group Immobilia, who's lived in River Ridge for over 40 years. Though fishing off the nearby levees is a pastime in River Ridge, the Mississippi River is an industrial waterway, and a chemical plant settles along its banks just south of River Ridge. "I don't think it's intrusive at all," says Broker Ken Hamrick, who specializes in the New Orleans area. "Though sometimes you get a little bit of noise off the river from the ships and things." River Ridge is primarily residential but has enough commercial activity to meet everyday needs.

River Ridge's vintage ranch-style homes and sprawling estates

River Ridge is mostly established, but transition is in the air. "You've got a mixture of the older homes that were built in the '50s and '60s, and as of late, they've seen this surge of tear down and build monster homes happening," Hamrick says. Though River Ridge's vintage homes are primarily traditional with plenty of ranch styles, its estate-sized homes are custom-built with European flair. Some settle on 1 to 9 acres with in-ground pools. And they could cost anywhere from $1 to 3 million, depending on amenities and square footage. Modest properties in River Ridge mostly hover between the $200,000 and $500,000 range. However, new construction or a sizable home that's been completely renovated might climb toward the $600,000s to $800,000s. Some residences near the water have views of the Mississippi from second-floor balconies, but none are on the water. "You don't want that," Hamrick says. Flooding is always possible in River Ridge, so additional insurance is advisable. "I always tell my clients, listen, if it's me, I am getting it because you just never know," he adds.

Hazel Park/Hilda Knoff School offers classes in American Sign Language

Jefferson Parish Schools serves the neighborhood's students. Hazel Park/Hilda Knoff School is in the neighborhood, serving prekindergarten through to eighth grade, and earns a B-minus rating from Niche. The school has two buildings, one for first through eighth grade and the other for pre-K and kindergarteners. "We are the deaf and hard of hearing hub for the east bank of Jefferson Parish. We service students with many disabilities and offer American Sign Language," says Principal Eric Spadoni. He adds that the school also encourages volunteerism at the nearby senior center, St. Joseph of Harahan. "We sent our dance team over there to interact with them. It's a community service project we do for our kids to learn that they can do something and give back to others." Students may take their next steps at the B-plus-rated Riverdale High. Jefferson Parish Library - River Ridge Library provides a quiet spot to study after school.

Quiet time at River Ridge Meditation Park

Little Farms Park is right at the heart of the neighborhood, with a tiny playground and two lighted tennis courts for casual games with friends that run into the twilight hours. Residents also enjoy The Mississippi River Trail. "It's adjacent to the levee, which separates the neighborhood from the river, so you can ride your bike along it," Hamrick says. River Ridge Meditation Park has benches for quiet sitting in nature, a short walking path, carefully manicured gardens, a small playground and a pet area. Riverside Country Club was established over 50 years ago as a community center for River Ridge and the neighboring community of Harahan. "There's a wonderful social aspect to it," says Eaton. The facility has a lighted pool for evening swims and multiple diving boards. Locals can even enjoy a movie while floating in the cooling waters during the summer. Residents can access a recently updated ballfield at the local Jesse Owens Playground and even more sports fields just next door at La Salle Park in the Metairie community. Bayou Segnette State Park, just over 8 miles south along the Mississippi River, offers trails through swampy areas where alligators and armadillo make their homes, a boat launch for fishing adventures and cabins floating in the water.

I have lived in the city of River Ridge for almost eighteen years. There is not as many things to do as there is in New Orleans and other suburbs like Metairie and Kenner, but the area I live in is safe and quiet.
