Mixing the old with the new
Northside is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Riverside, with long-time and brand-new residents living at the northern gateway into the city. The neighborhood was well-known for its natural sulfur spring during Riverside’s founding years. In 1886, the spring site was converted into a pool and bathhouse, which was featured in early 20th century Buster Keaton and Houdini films. Present-day Northside has a diverse streetscape, where medium-density suburbs and deep rural-style home lots mix with spacious public parks and recreation centers. It's characterized by both industrial and suburban touches. "Driving through Northside, there are a lot of auto shops and businesses there so it seems like it's all industrial but there's a bunch of neighborhoods in that vicinity, too. It's a little mix of both," says Kassandra Rangel, a Marcy Library Associate and longtime Riverside resident. No matter the era, Northside is always full of activity.

Northside homes
There is a distinct variety of residential areas in Northside. Whether it's public streets, in gated planned communities, condos or apartments, there's a unique abode for every resident. Many of the houses in Northside are a mix of single-family houses. Single-story ranch styles sit alongside more contemporary housing styles. Residents also enjoy houses adorned with terra cotta roofing and warmly-colored stucco walls unique to Spanish and Mediterranean architecture. Palm-shaded sidewalks connect residents to nearby parks and schools. Home prices in this area begin around $500,000 for a modestly-sized ranch with three beds and one bath, and can go as high as $1 million for larger estates.

Stop into MGM Burgers, a locally owned establishment serving up quality breakfast dishes and burgers alike. Tacos Marline and Del Taco both have lots of tasty options for Mexican cuisine. Northside is predominantly residential, so there are no local grocers, but proximity to downtown Riverside covers that base while providing quality retail shopping options. A short three-mile drive to Maxi Foods Market or Clark's Nutrition and Natural Foods will take care of any grocery needs.

Even more dedicated athletic space is available at the AB Brown Sports Complex, where soccer players have playing fields. Route 60 and I-215
Northside is located near California State Route 60, an East-West highway that serves the municipalities on the east side of Los Angeles and runs southbound of the San Gabriel Valley. It also has highway access to I-215, which serves the San Bernardino, Riverside and Ontario areas and connects to I-10. "One of the biggest conveniences of driving through Northside is the two gas stations across from each other. You come up on them right before you jump on the freeway and it's a good place to stop and rest before you jump on the 91 West to go to the beach cities. The 91 changes into the 215, another major freeway that's used to get to San Bernardino and that freeway is used to transport people to the 10 or the 210 to LA," Rangel says.

There is not a lot of crime in Riverside. One time I walked from my local college all the way home in the middle of the night and remained unharmed and safe. The only thing that could be a little scary at times are the homeless, because they are sometimes difficult to see at night and they might startle you with their sudden presence.

I believe that community that I live in is very well kept up and there are not many problems. As the town is still growing. And with time there will be better improvements.
