Rockleigh is a quiet borough nestled near the state line
Amid sprawling greenery and just a few miles west of the Hudson River sits Rockleigh, a small borough of New Jersey in one of the state’s most northeastern regions. It’s to the eastern border of Northvale and rolls right up to the New York – New Jersey border near the Palisades.
Sprawling homes with multiacre lots sell fast, keeping inventory low
“Rockleigh is unique compared to the neighboring towns,” says Bahr Rapaport, real estate sales associate of Keller Williams Town Life. “It has huge, oversized properties, some two acres and some as large as five or 10 acres. It’s also known for its lower tax bracket.” With a population of 407 as of the 2020 census, Rockleigh is a tight-knit community with a variety of home styles. Whether you’re looking for a split-level or a Victorian, a colonial or Cape Cod, myriad styles populate Rockleigh with well-landscaped yards. Colonials are the most popular, while some ranch-style abodes can be found on larger lots, and homes in Rockleigh typically sell for $2 million and upwards.
However, home availability is scarce. “Because of the large property sizes, it’s not a densely populated town,” Rapaport says. “That makes total population pretty low but also makes the housing inventory very low. It makes it difficult to get homes in Rockleigh, so when they do come to market, they tend to go fairly fast.”
Students attend Northvale’s or Norwood’s highly rated public schools
For education, students attend the Northvale or Norwood Public Schools for grades K-8, and then move on to Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan for ninth through 12th grades. All three schools are scored at an A or better on Niche. The high school’s A+ grade ranks it in the top 25 best such institutions in New Jersey, and Rockleigh students attend as part of a sending/receiving agreement.
Equestrian centers, golf courses and trails surround the borough
If you’re spending the day outside, hit the links at the Rockleigh Bergen County Golf Course or take to the paths at Rockleigh Woods Trailhead. “A lot of people who are into golfing or equestrian, there’s a lot of horse facilities,” Rapaport says. “The neighboring towns have more of the restaurants, like Closter, Norwood or even right across the border in Nayak.” Hiking and sightseeing are also popular in the area, and spanning the eastern edge of the neighborhood is Alpine Park. The area bleeds into Rockleigh from Alpine itself, and Palisades Interstate Park is also nearby as well. Tallman Mountain State Park sits northwest across the Palisades Interstate Parkway and offers amenities for tennis and swimming as well as playgrounds, several fields and more.
The Rockleigh is located near the center of the neighborhood, an estate on a 12-acre slice of land that has hosted events for more than a quarter century. “The Rockleigh is a huge wedding, social events and bat mitzvah destination,” Rapaport says. “It’s one of the better event halls in the area.”
Highways connect Rockleigh residents to New York
Residents also have accessibility to the New York metropolitan area via U.S. Route 9W, which connects to the George Washington Bridge in less than half an hour’s drive.
