Sierra Oaks, “country” suburban living
Anchored by the American River to its south, Sierra Oaks is one of Sacramento’s first suburban neighborhoods. The neighborhood was built to give former city residents a taste of “country” living, and land planners cultivated this rural atmosphere with wide, winding roads, an abundance of mature foliage and a lack of sidewalks. Today, buyers are drawn to the area because of its massive redwoods, access points to the American River and short commute to Midtown Sacramento.
From Normandy-style to all sorts of homes
Sierra Oaks, founded in 1929, used to be entirely made up of French-inspired homes, colloquially known as Normandy-style homes. However, today, it features a diverse housing stock that includes ranch-style, mid-century and custom homes. Most properties cost between $520,000 and $950,000, with some listing as high as $3 million, and date back to the 1960s through the 1980s. “It’s definitely an old yet established neighborhood,” says Lisa Drake, real estate expert of Lisa Drake Properties. “Even with its age, the area has managed to stay really nice, especially along the river.” Drake also mentions that some residential lots can be as big as 2 acres. Susan Lawrence-Nunley of Birdie Real Estate and a Sacramento native says large lot sizes can benefit homeowners looking for a “rural” lifestyle. “Bigger lots mean more privacy and more space,” Lawrence-Nunley says. “You are not so close to your neighbors but very close to nature.”

American River, the neighborhood's personal playground
The American River is Sierra Oaks’ playground. On warm summer days, locals can be found swimming, fishing, inner tubing and kayaking along the river, while others simply come to sunbathe or stroll along the river’s rocky banks. Following the river is also the American River Parkway and the Jedediah Smith Memorial Cycling Route, where outdoor explorers can hike, bike, inline skate and even horseback ride. The neighborhood is also home to plenty of traditional city park spaces, such as Oak Meadow Park, Sierra Oaks Park, and University Park. Each features a children’s play structure, shaded benches, drinking fountains, picnic areas and various sports fields, such as soccer pitches and tennis courts.

Modern eats all along Fair Oaks Boulevard
Although Sierra Oaks has a rustic and rural feel, modern amenities like eateries and shopping centers are just outside its northern borders off Fair Oaks Boulevard. Loehmann’s Plaza houses the closest grocery store, Save Mart, where locals can stock their pantry at discounted prices. Inside the plaza is also Grateful Bread, a locally owned bakery specializing in sourdough bread. Each loaf takes three days to make from scratch, is baked fresh every day and is sweetened only with locally sourced honey. Locals can grab a warm cup of coffee at Temple Coffee Roasters, a coffee shop with a farm-to-cup business model offering a variety of thoughtfully roasted espressos and rare java options. Pavilions Shopping Center is a little farther west on Fair Oaks Boulevard. It provides residents with a reasonable selection of clothing stores and sit-down dining, like Piatti Italian Restaurant and Wildwood Kitchen and Bar.
