The community’s residential landscape showcases high-reaching oak trees, which turn front yards orange in fall. Homes built throughout the 20th century sit back from streets with a patchwork of repaved asphalt. The homes come in various architectural styles, including Cape Cods, American Vernaculars, ranch and split-level styles. Most feature unfenced backyards and detached garages. According to the City of St. Cloud’s official website, roughly half of the neighborhood’s housing stock comprises rentals. Similarly, several apartment complexes make up one-third of the community. Home prices range from $140,000 to $270,000, depending on size and condition.

McKinley Park's traditional playground and the neighboring Railroad Trail

McKinley Park’s playground and basketball court sit in the neighborhood’s northwestern corner. Visitors can ride their bikes along the Railroad Trail, which runs 3 miles south to River Bluffs Regional Park. Railroad Park on 11th Avenue also offers a traditional park experience and access to the trail. Nearby recreation includes Calvary Hill Park’s popular sledding hills, less than a half-mile west, and Lake George Park’s year-round opportunities three blocks north. According to Mary Ellen Richter, the park attracts locals from around the city. “There are walking paths, and people will kayak on the lake and ice skate in the winter,” says Mary Ellen Richter, a local real estate broker with Kerber Castle Realty Group.

Running errands along Division Street

New York Gyro, a counter-style eatery on the corner of University Drive South and 9th Avenue Street, serves up quick Middle Eastern fare like shawarma and falafel. Meanwhile, chain restaurants like Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen and Little Caesars Pizza line Division Street a half-mile northeast. “Division Street is where everything in St. Cloud is,” says Priccilla Carpenter, a native of St. Cloud. Crossroads Center’s indoor retailers are also along the busy stretch. “It’s not as popular as it used to be, but everyone still goes there to shop.” The Division Street corridor includes a Walmart, Costco and the Crossroads Center, a shopping mall that remains anchored by a Macy’s, JCPenney and Scheels sporting goods store. Coburn’s Grocery Store sits closer to home, directly north on the other side of University Drive South.

Cheering on the Huskies

St. Cloud State University’s Herb Brooke National Hockey Center is on the university campus. Ice hockey fans can cheer on the Huskies at home games throughout the season, from early October through early March. Each year, Summertime by George! makes its way back to Lake George Park. Hosted by the Rotary Club of St. Cloud, the free concert series brings local musicians and food trucks to the park every Wednesday night from June through August.

Young students enroll in classes at Talahi Community School for preschool through third grade and Lincoln Elementary for fourth and fifth grade . Niche gives both schools a C rating. Older students attend South Junior High School, which holds a C-plus rating and sits in the neighborhood's center. Tech High School school maintains a B rating and an array of activities, from Gardening Club to Mock Trial and Math Teams. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, is also located in the neighborhood on 11th Avenue South for those seeking private education. About a mile east of the neighborhood, St. Cloud State University enrolls about 10,000 students at its campus in the adjacent Southside neighborhood.
