St. Paul’s West Side is a historic community with plenty to do
In a dimly lit cave beneath Saint Paul ’s West Side, dance partners swing each other around to the music of a live band every Thursday night, a weekly tradition that honors the Wabasha Street Caves’ role in the Prohibition. The neighborhood’s history is also preserved in its houses, which are often over a century old and cost less than those in many Twin Cities communities. People come to the area for the annual Cinco de Mayo Festival and events at Harriet Island Regional Park. Downtown Saint Paul is just across the Mississippi River, and downtown Minneapolis is about 10 miles away.

Older homes cost less than other St. Paul neighborhoods
You can find a variety of homes dating back to the late 1800s. “There’s a lot of folklore around the houses, where a lot of the homeowners claim that their houses used to be attached to the caves,” says Rick Bean, longtime Saint Paul resident and Realtor with the Hartmann Team at Re/Max Results. “It was part of the Prohibition-era stuff. How much of it is true? I don’t know, but it’s kind of fun.” Architectural styles include bungalows, Foursquares, workers cottages and the occasional Queen Annes. “There’s a lot of cool stuff with intricate details,” Bean says. You can also find some ranch-style homes, townhouses and condos.
The median single-family home price is lower than in West Seventh, but is on par with East Side neighborhoods like Dayton's Bluff. “This is a great starting place for first-time buyers,” says local Realtor Libby Mejia with Brix Real Estate. Prices generally range from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$500,000s, but some multifamily properties sell for the mid-$600,000s. Townhouses and condos can cost between the low $100,000s and the mid-$200,000s. Nearly half of the residents rent.

Locals walk, drive and take the bus around the Twin Cities
The West Side of Saint Paul is incredibly pedestrian-friendly. “You could definitely live on the West Side and walk to a job downtown,” Bean says. However, running errands like groceries is easier if you drive or take the Metro Transit bus. “You can definitely find bus stops to get around pretty much everywhere in Saint Paul and Minneapolis,” Bean says. Even with so much public transportation, Bean says most households have at least one car. U.S. Route 52 goes through the neighborhood and connects with Interstate 94 and Interstate 35 East. Downtown Saint Paul is less than 5 minutes away, and downtown Minneapolis is about a 25-minute drive.
While industrial railroads and Saint Paul Downtown Airport, which primarily has corporate flights, are in the neighborhood, they rarely impact daily life. Because flight paths generally follow the Mississippi River, Bean says, “By the time the planes are over any residential area, they’re pretty high up there.” He says that noise is not a big concern in the area, except for the occasional helicopter or if you’re “really close to the industrial area.”

Harriet Island Regional Park has recreation and events
Like most of Saint Paul, the West Side has no shortage of parks. One of the most notable is Harriet Island Regional Park, which overlooks the Mississippi River. You can:
Fish from the public dock
Bring your kids to the play area
Enjoy an outdoor lunch at the picnic area
Walk your dog along the riverwalk
Explore the city on the Padelford Riverboats Sightseeing Cruise
“Beyond the park itself, it links up with a bunch of trails,” Bean says. You can access over 200 miles of bike trails. The park also hosts popular events like the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival and the first day of the Cinco de Mayo Festival, which moves to Cesar Chavez Street for day two. There’s a parade, live music and over 120 artisan and food vendors.

History comes alive at Wabasha Street Caves
Each year, people from all over the Twin Cities come to the West Side for its Cinco de Mayo celebration. This annual tradition since 1985 kicks off with a parade followed by a car and bike show, then American Bullies, French Bulldogs and exotic dogs strut their stuff for the annual dog show. There's also a softball tournament and authentic "placita" market, where visitors can shop from local vendors, listen to live music and try different Mexican foods.
Boca Chica is one of the more popular restaurants on the West Side
There are a handful of local restaurants and shops on the West Side. Boca Chica opened as a small restaurant seating only 28 customers in 1964 and has grown into one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in the Twin Cities. You can order dinner or pick up specialty groceries at El Burrito Mercado, which Mejia says, “is the secret to my mother-in-law’s amazing tamales.” Residents also buy fresh produce from the West Side Farmers Market, which is every Saturday morning from early June to early October.
