Just north of downtown
Muscupiabe is an established suburb bordering the northwest corner of Downtown San Bernardino between Route 210, Interstate 215 and Route 259. Muscupiabe's name comes from the Indigenous Serrano meaning "place of little pines" — set near the Cajon mountain pass, the Serrano people would move here when the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains lacked natural resources. By the mid-1800s, the land would be passed around between Mexico and local government, invaded by horse thieves and abandoned again. It wasn't until the late 1870s that the area was able to start developing into the suburb it's known as today; filled with older homes, ample yard space and mountain views. As the Cajon Pass once lured settlers and migrating hunters; now, the 210 and 215 freeways attract modern residents, conveniently linking them to Los Angeles and Orange County. "The best thing about this part of San Bernardino are the street vendors," says Juan Torres, San Bernardino resident and Broker Associate with Century 21 King. "Small local vendors come together to sell everything from quesabirria to elote and fresh fruit on the weekends. It's something worth traveling here for."
Residents of Muscupiabe enjoy the incredible views of the San Bernardino Mountains.
