Clairemont Mesa East
Suburban Neighborhood in San Diego, California
San Diego County 92111, 92117
Midcentury single-family builds and condos
Most homes here date back to the 1950s and '60s, though construction continued through the ‘90s. Most houses are single-story ranch-style, but it’s possible to find some two-story builds; earlier homes typically have traditional architectural details, while later homes tend to have more modern aesthetics. “What’s cool is that these homes aren’t governed by HOAs anymore, so now you can add on and do what you want, which you cannot do in Carmel Valley,” says local resident Bobby Martins, broker and owner at Martins Realty Group. "If you want to customize in a unique manner, this is a fantastic neighborhood.” Modest builds with roughly 1,200 square feet start around $800,000, while 2,000-square-foot versions with significant renovations and upgrades can go for upward of $1.5 million. Buyers can also find small apartment-style studio condos starting at around $330,000; larger condo units and townhouses can go for upward of $650,000.Outdoor recreation for all ages at local community parks
At the neighborhood’s south end neighboring San Diego Mesa College, 70-acre Kearny Mesa Park welcomes residents to swim at the pool or work up a sweat playing baseball, soccer, tennis and basketball. Kids can burn off some energy at the playground, while four-legged residents can do the same at the dog park. The on-site San Diego BMX Track is one of the nation’s original BMX racing tracks where riders can learn, practice and compete. To the north, Lindbergh Park and Olive Grove Park have their own playgrounds and basketball courts, plus plenty of open green space.Served by San Diego Unified District and home to San Diego Mesa College
Students can attend schools within the San Diego Unified District, including Clairemont Canyons Elementary and Innovation Middle School, both of which earn a B rating from Niche. At Madison High, which also earns a B, students can enroll in career and technical education courses in video production, environmental engineering and automotive technology. Clairemont Mesa East is also home to San Diego Mesa College, one of the largest community colleges in the city.Annual family fun at nearby South Clairemont Park
Each September, South Clairemont Park, found just a couple miles west, hosts Clairemont Family Day. There are amusement park rides and a car show, as well as pony rides and other activities for kids; the park’s swimming pool stages water-themed events like an inflatable water obstacle course. Attendees of all ages can enjoy food from a variety of vendors while enjoying live music and dance performances.Public transportation and interstate access
Commuters have easy access to major transportation arteries: the neighborhood's bordered east by Interstate 805, Interstate 5 is a few miles west and Interstate 8 is roughly 6 miles south. Within the neighborhood, Balboa Avenue and Genesee Avenue are lined with San Diego Metropolitan Transit System bus stops. Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center is a few miles east, and San Diego International Airport is about 10 miles south.Big name retailers and international cuisine
Balboa Mesa Shopping Center is on the neighborhood’s west side, set on the main thoroughfare of Balboa Avenue. Here, residents can stock up on groceries at Vons and Sprout’s Farmer’s Market, or head to 99 Ranch Market for Asian specialties and fresh seafood; Balboa International Market offers Mediterranean groceries, and prepared meals like gyros and kebabs. Locals can shop at the Kohl’s and Target here, and dine at national chains like Panda Express and Panera Bread. 85 Cafe is a regional staple for boba tea, coffee and Asian baked goods like egg tarts.Residents can head north to Clairemont Mesa Boulevard for a selection of locally owned eateries, like Aladdin Mediterranean Restaurant for Middle Eastern favorites, and Palmitos Mexican Eatery for authentic south-of-the-border fare with a focus on seafood. Clairemont Mesa East is also just west of the regionally famous Convoy Street, known as “Asian Restaurant Row,” with over 100 popular restaurants from various Asian countries. “It’s a great neighborhood for foodies because there are a lot of cool places,” Martins says. “You have incredible Korean barbecue places and Chinese cuisine, and they’ve recently added in some gastropubs.”
