Views of San Miguel and Coronado Bridge
Originally named Mountain View in honor of its San Miguel Mountain vista 20 miles east, the community has developed into a densely connected network of homes rimmed by a retail center, sports complex and a beloved neighborhood park. The green spaces in the community are named after local leaders. While some enjoy views of distant ranges and the Coronado Bridge, the community is close to San Diego Bay and the city center. According to Mario Garduno, a local Realtor with Century 21 Award, "Mountain View is an up-and-coming community close to a lot of attractions like the breweries in Barrio Logan, downtown and Coronado. Most homes are still relatively in their original architectural state."

From 1920s bungalows to contemporary townhouses
Mountain View has a number of multifamily units available. But future residents can also find cottages with palms, homes showing Mediterranean-influence stucco and 1920s remodels surrounded in decorative fencing. Among the established houses are updated 1940s one-bedroom bungalows, completely renovated two-bedroom homes and historic properties with views of downtown. District 14 Townhomes offers contemporary three-story units built in the last five years. Buyers generally have options between $500,000 and $1 million. Attached homes like condos and townhouses typically sell between $600,000 and $675,000. "It's a great entry for first-time buyers because you can buy a home in Mountain View for several hundred thousand less than comparable homes in other San Diego neighborhoods," Garduno says.

Shopping and Dining
At the retail plaza on Imperial Avenue, locals pick up goods at 99 Cents Only Store and find supplies for their next house project at Home Depot. The commercial corridor includes restaurants, like Asia Wok and Sizzlers, as well as a 24 Hour Fitness. Shoppers may also get groceries and convenience items at small markets or drive 2 miles to stock up at Costco.

Celebrating local businesses
Mountain View native Lana Cooper-Jones says that her non-profit, The Cooper Family Foundation, has organized a local event for several decades to uplift entrepreneurs in the community. "Our Juneteenth celebration has longstanding roots in the area. The event used to occur yearly in Southcrest Park, but it was moved to Memorial Park during the pandemic," she says. "Last year, we had over 120 vendors and over 5,000 visitors. People come from all over the city to celebrate the community."
Mountain View students have two tend two school in the neighborhood
Public students may start at Baker Elementary, which has a B-minus grade on Niche, or attend Mountain View School until the end of eighth grade. The K to 8 public school groups different grade levels together for classroom instruction in a multiage program. Just outside of the neighborhood is Lincoln High, which also receives a B-minus grade.

Renaming a longtime gathering space
Mountain View Park has drawn people together at the heart of the community since 1914. Over the years, this 11-acre recreational anchor has been the site of car shows in the 1960s, neighborhood tennis matches, potlucks and a community center that was so popular, it received a complete overhaul in 2019. The new center features fitness and dance rooms, colorful murals and a spacious patio overlooking the lawn. "The park was a well-known place for social gatherings and music bands on Sundays. Now, the city is dedicating the park to the local leader, Neal Petties, responsible for organizing those events," Cooper-Jones explains. A community leader and former NFL player, Petties's contributions have earned him a legendary reputation as a life coach to area youth.

Nearby roadways and public transit options
Garduna says neighbors working in South Bay or downtown can easily hop on Interstate 15. Also, Interstate 805 curves along the eastern side, leading to more of the region. Bus stops line down Logan and Imperial Avenues, but commuters may also take the Orange Line from 47th Street Station, just outside the community.

Vital community resources add to the community
The former Southeast Athletic Field in Mountain View was renamed the Willie Henderson Sports Complex in the late 1980s to honor a hometown community advocate who was instrumental in creating youth ballfields. The complex offers multiple sports fields, tot lots and year-round activities from youth volleyball and cooking classes to homework club. San Diego College of Continuing Education and the Mountain View/Beckwourth Branch Library are connected by paved trails. Kids enjoy the roster of programs offered at the library, from gardening club to story time.
