Some of the best Mexican Street tacos on this side of the border are served at El Sabroso Taco Shop. Next door, La Bodeguita is just one of the neighborhood’s corner markets, packed with all the everyday necessities. In seventh grade, all public school students move on to San Ysidro Middle. Both schools score a C on Niche. Receiving a solid B-plus, San Ysidro High is a part of the Sweetwater Union High School District, offering an English Language development curriculum for Spanish-speaking students. Adults can receive their high school diploma or earn career certifications from San Ysidro’s Adult School.Spanish-style homes overlook the San Ysidro Mountains
Concrete sidewalks climb up gently sloping residential streets, offering panoramic views of the San Ysidro Mountain range. Most homes were built during the 1980s and reflect the area’s Spanish influence. Terracotta roofs and sturdy stucco walls protect homes from frequent wildfires during the summer months. Home styles range from Spanish Revival townhomes to two-story Mission Revivals, with several two-bedroom condos available as well. Because of the area’s dry climate, yards typically feature concrete hardscapes embellished with cacti and palm trees of all shapes and sizes. San Ysidro’s detached homes list between $700,000 and $900,000, while townhomes and condos typically range from $300,000 to $500,000.Home to the busiest port of entry in America
The San Ysidro Port of Entry is one of the busiest land border crossings in the world, with Interstate 5 linking to Mexican Federal Highway 1. On either side of the 34-lane freeway, two pedestrian walkways take residents through Customs and Border Protection into Tijuana. San Ysidro Station sits adjacent to the eastern walkway. From here, international commuters can ride into Downtown Tijuana or take the blue trolley line north to the San Diego Airport. San Ysidro’s Health Center sits on the north side of the neighborhood between State Route 905 and Beyer Boulevard.Challenges along the Mexican Border
San Ysidro’s location on the Mexican border has led to some challenges for the community. Cartels have historically used part of Tijuana River Valley Regional Park as a scouting and entry location. In recent years, a 14-mile-long border wall has been built to help prevent illegal entry and drug smuggling. Additionally, a large migrant camp sits between the primary and secondary border walls in the East Valley desert, just outside the park. Local immigrant rights groups and community volunteers are currently working to supply water, food and other necessities to the camp.Hike, bike or horse back ride throughthe Tijuana River Valley
Kids can slide into the sand pit at Howard Lane Park and rinse off in the Vista Terrace Pool. Further east, local youth soccer players practice at the Community Activity Center. San Ysidro Park’s fenced-in sports courts and canopy-covered playground are only a short walk away. Across the street, the civic center provides community after-school programs and an array of social services through its partnership with local non-profits. Community baseball and softball leagues compete on the ball fields at the Cesar Chavez Recreation Center. On the west side of San Ysidro, residents can hike, bike or ride horses through the rugged terrain in Tijuana River Valley Regional Park.
