A neighborhood with the perks of a perch
From the top of Crocker Amazon, residents can take in a full view of San Francisco. “Crocker Amazon perches up and looks over the city, which is nice as well,” says Carren Shagley, a founder and Associate Broker with Legacy Real Estate. Located on the outskirts of downtown San Francisco, the neighborhood has a unique vibe. “There’s a real feel of community out there,” Shagley says. “People feel like they’re in a slightly different world from San Francisco. They’re removed from downtown and there’s not a lot of congestion in Crocker Amazon.”

Mission street cuisine
Mission Street is home to a variety of restaurants serving ethnic cuisines, all minutes from most of the homes in Crocker Amazon, and as new businesses open, they receive support from the community. “People are quick to be supportive when something new opens up,” says Shagley. Walking between restaurants, it's easy to see murals adorning the walls and to take in the smells of different restaurants wafting through the streets. Reina’s Restaurant serves Salvadorean cuisine, and JJamPpong offers spicy raw crab. For a casual and cash-only night out, residents head to Billiard Palacade to play pool until the wee hours and drink beer by the bottle. For groceries, most head to Safeway.

A variety of housing styles
Homes in Crocker Amazon cover a variety of styles, shapes and sizes. “Everybody works on their homes and they communicate with their neighbors,” says Shagley. Pastel art deco homes share the street with creaking gothic revivals, rambling Queen Annes and kitschy storybook homes. Properties in the neighborhood tend to go for between $1.2 and $2 million, and some condos are available for around $500,000. Most homes have inches of room between them on either side, but Crocker Amazon is one of the few San Francisco neighborhoods with detached homes with at least 10 feet of space between each other, creating a bit more space for residents.

Residents can walk to McLaren Park, which has an off-leash dog park along with a huge variety of facilities across its 313 acres. Athletes can pack their cleats to tear up one of the park's five soccer fields, volley tennis balls back and forth at the tennis court or walk around the trails that wind their way through the park. Alice Chalmers Playground is popular, too – especially with the kids. It's got a chrome tube slide connected to a three-level jungle gym with a climbing web.

There are some crimes that happen but they do not really affect me much. A lot of hard-working lower-class immigrant families live here so for the most part, it is pretty relaxed. At night it could get a little scary but it's usually calm except for the occasional drunk driver doing O's near my house. Police officers regularly patrol the street of my neighborhood which increases my sense of safety. Overall, it may not look like it, but it is a pretty safe neighborhood.
