Sumptuous views and so much more
A trip down one of the Marina’s streets is like a peek into a telescope, with breathtaking views of the rest of the city pouring through the lens. That’s the type of sights this neighborhood’s straight-as-a-ruler roads provide, and it can be a daily experience with a home here. Also called the Marina District, the Marina runs by both the coast of the bay and the sprawling Presidio National Park. Plus, an assortment of commercial amenities are easy to come by here and the crime score is on par with the national average, according to the CAP Index. “They have a nice waterfront over there, a nice yacht club. It’s also up against the Presidio, which has a lot of trees and forests. A bunch of redwoods; it’s nice and nature-y to take hikes,” says Kalani Ruidas, a designer at Fiori, a florist shop in the Marina.

Homes help paint a picturesque landscape
The Marina’s eclectic collection of colorful homes adds to the postcard-like views this neighborhood’s streets provide. These homes come in a mix of mostly early 20th-century architecture, with styles ranging from Mediterranean with terracotta roofs to art deco with wide and tall windows. “It still has some of that old-timey charm,” Ruidas says. Still, Ruidas notes that a lot of the homes here have been renovated and modernized. Some of the homes on the west side of the Marina, by the neighborhood’s Palace of Fine Arts, are known for their grandiosity in particular, including their size and finely maintained exteriors. The Marina’s inventory includes a mix of not just single-family homes, but also multifamily options and condos. Price tags in the neighborhood start in the $700,000s for a one-bedroom and one-bathroom condo to more than $3 million for a single-family home or condo of well over 2,000 square feet.

Marina thoroughfares have much to offer
The Marina has a couple of bustling commercial stretches in Chestnut Street and Lombard Street, loaded with restaurants and shops. “There’s a lot of great staples of SF dining,” Ruidas says. The options include several Italian spots, Ruidas says. She says that A16 on Chestnut is very popular, liked in part for its meatballs. As is Delarosa down the street, for its Roman-style pizza. Fiori is among the local businesses on Chestnut, offering an array of curated flower arrangements. Fiori is across the street from Marina Supermarket, a quick spot to pick up groceries, meats and more. Locals can follow a meal at one of the places on Chestnut or Lombard with a show at the Palace of Fine Arts, which dates back to the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, a world’s fair. The theatre here hosts everything from concerts to comedy shows.

Nearby schools are well-regarded
Students and their families across the city can choose their school preferences within the San Francisco Unified School District. One of the options right in the Marina is Claire Lilienthal Alternative School K-8, which has an overall A grade on Niche and includes kindergarten through eighth grade. Claire Lilienthal offers the city’s only Korean Immersion Program. From there, students could move on to the nearby Galileo Academy of Science & Technology, which also boasts an A rating and specialized programs in entrepreneurship, computer science, health, biotech, digital communication and environmental science.
Outdoor options abound
The Marina has no shortage of spots to enjoy some fresh air. The Presidio is the standout, though, a 1,491-acre expanse with 24 miles of hiking and biking trails, plus beaches, multiple golf courses and more.
The bike riding opportunities are numerous around here, including not just The Presidio, but also by the water, around Fort Mason and across the Golden Gate Bridge, Ruidas says. The Presidio, Fort Mason and the 74-acre Marina Green are also prime places to simply plop down and enjoy a picnic while soaking in unforgettable views of the bay and the bridge.
