A lively lifestyle
Sitting on the other side of Fell Street just across from The Panhandle city park, the lively neighborhood of North Park has been making a name for itself. Appropriately referred to by locals as North of the Panhandle — or just NoPa — the neighborhood’s convenient location right in the center of the city gives residents access to all the amenities they need. “NoPa’s star attraction is its proximity to Golden Gate Park,” says longtime San Francisco resident David Lytle. ”It’s also full of small bars and eateries that are really popular with locals.” Being between the two parks, the University of San Francisco campus and the Victorian-home heaven that is Alamo Square makes for a festive lifestyle in a community full of history, and it just gets better.

A world of wonder
NoPa residents can easily cross Stanyan Street and dive into the wonder that is Golden State Park. Covering over 1,000 acres of open and green space, the park is accented with giant trees and calming lakes and is home to multiple attractions that pull in countless visitors year-round. The Conservatory of Flowers houses several collections of a total of 1,700 species of exotic plants and the Japanese Tea Garden — the oldest in the country — is a 3.5-acre shout-out to the traditional Japanese art of gardening. Heavily involved in the area’s tennis community, the Golden Gate Park Tennis Center has over 20 tennis courts to be reserved for use and a competitive lawn bowling league has found a home in the park. Once the arboretum of Scottish-born horticulturist John McLaren, the Panhandle — the oldest of San Francisco’s parks — is home to an elaborate children's play area with swings and slides, as well as jogging trails, an exercise course and basketball courts.

Music and comedy all for free
Golden Gate Park also serves as the venue for several special events throughout the year. Live music events include the Surrealistic Summer Solstice Jam in June, the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in August and Opera in the Park which takes place each September. Also in September, Comedy Day welcomes 1,000 comedians from across the globe to entertain almost a half-million people fittingly held at Golden Gate Park’s Robin Williams Meadow. During USF’s baseball season, fans can cheer on the Dons at Ulrich Field & Bendetti Diamond. For those looking for a dose of pop culture, the famous Painted Ladies — as seen on the hit 90s sitcom Full House — are right next door in Alamo Square.

Colorful condos and vintage Victorians
Along the sometimes busy, sometimes narrow streets, it’s very normal to see neighbors walking their dogs and riding their ten-speeds; small trees planted right into squares in the sidewalk offer more delight than shade. Housing styles in NoPa are mainly a combination of Victorian- or Edwardian-era townhouses and three-story condo buildings with colorful facades, bay windows and ornate wood trim; few, though, are as fanciful as the Painted Ladies of Alamo Square. “Housing stock is moving pretty quickly in NoPa, and the San Francisco market has really heated up in general,” says Matt Francis of Vanguard Properties. “COVID wasn’t very kind to San Fran real estate, but that’s been changing since 2023.” Francis adds that condos can range from $800,000 to $3 million, while price tags for larger single-family homes and townhouses can be anywhere between $1 million and $4 million.

Comfort cuisine and homemade ice cream
Divisadero Street is the location of most of the community’s commercial action, but Bob’s Donuts on Baker Street is a local favorite that gives vintage '60s donut shop vibes full of tasty treats where there’s always a line on weekend mornings. For Southern-style comfort cuisine, Brenda’s Meat & Three follows the tradition of an entrée and three sides from a list of favorites. Nightlife livens up at Emporium San Francisco, a family-friendly, neon-lit pool hall with old-school arcade games and a cocktail bar. Local grocery stores include Lucky and the family-owned Nopa Corner Market, and just outside the neighborhood is the city chain Bi-Rite, known for its house-made ice cream.

No need for a car
Because of the location and proximity to amenities, NoPa residents can take advantage of not necessarily needing a car. “It’s also super bike-friendly and close to a bunch of MUNI lines, so it’s easy to live here without a car,” says Lytle, MUNI being the local name for the San Francisco Municipal Railway. For those who’d rather drive, major thoroughfares like Fell Street, Masonic Avenue and Divisadero Street are all a part of the neighborhood, and the 101 Freeway is just past Alamo Square. Part of the Dignity Health network, St. Mary’s Medical Center, located on Stanyan right across from Golden Gate Park, was recognized by Healthgrades as one of America’s 250 Best Hospitals in 2023.
North Park residents can mostly forego a personal car for daily use in favor of public transit.
