Trendy and eclectic urban district near big San Francisco tech hubs
Formerly a commercial warehouse district, South of Market, or SoMa, is now a colorful San Francisco hub with a mix of high-rise buildings, industrial-chic lofts and historic buildings alongside a trendy cultural and lifestyle scene. “It’s just an area to really be in. It’s right next to Downtown, the freeway and two minutes from Oracle Park,” says Jonathan Ng, a local Real Broker Associate who was born and raised in San Francisco. “There’s a lot of things to do here with more restaurants popping up all the time, and it’s also always been known for its night scene, so there are tons of clubs and bars too within walking distance.” This downtown district’s transformation began about 30 years ago as technology companies opened offices ahead of the late 90s dot-com boom. Many major software and technology companies are still in SoMa, including Twitter, Airbnb and Uber. More big tech hubs, though, have moved into the neighboring South Beach business district, turning South of Market from a tech destination into a hipper neighborhood that attracts an eclectic crowd. “South of Market now has more of a diverse mix of people who live here with less tech people than there used to be," says Daniel Nguyen, a longtime Bay Area resident and property manager at the popular SOMA Residences apartment complex.

Elevated burgers are the star of Marlowe, a bistro-style neighborhood joint offering other highlight items like Brussels sprout chips and smoked bone marrow. The nightlife scene is well showcased at Dirty Habit on 4th Street, known for its well-crafted cocktails within an enclosed patio. Other popular drinking spots include Press Club 20, with its cool downstairs lounge and impressive collection of international wines. Residents can enjoy multiple shopping centers, including Meteron on 4th Street, with a mix of shops and casual dining, plus a movie theater and a big box Target. There’s also Westfield San Francisco Centre on 5th Street, featuring over 100 stores, including Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s, plus restaurants in its nine-story building that’s topped by a landmark glass dome. For grocery shopping, the neighborhood has a Whole Foods Market on 4th Street and an IKEA nearby on Market Street.
