Southshore blends a beachy, golf and college lifestyle
The coast of the Southshore is an appealing part of the Bay Area. From surfing favorite Ocean Beach down along Funston Beach, where residents and their dogs can be seen on daily strolls, to the cedar-covered coves and primrose-covered hills of Phillip Burton Memorial Beach, residents of Southshore have their choice of sand and surf on the Pacific Ocean coast. When cold, locals can go to the San Francisco Zoo, one of three golf courses or the public art galleries at San Francisco State, among other options. Nearby, commuters can take advantage of the Muni routes that serve this part of San Francisco.
Condos, bungalows and split-levels fill the residential streets
Home prices in Southshore range from $750,000 to $2 million. Condominiums, prewar Monterey-style bungalows, a few Tudor revivals and midcentury split-levels comprise the bulk of the neighborhood housing stock. For $800,000, buyers can find a sizeable two-bedroom condo in the gated Lake Merced Hills Community, bordering Lake Merced Park. HOA fees in such a community run around $1,000 per month. Two-bedroom postwar split-level homes on large lots are listed for $1.2 million. At the top of the market are postwar split-levels remodeled into modernist homes with new windows and four bedrooms.
Local beaches and golf courses define the recreation scene
Surfing is a popular pastime in Southshore, but the water is cold. The chill doesn’t stop many, though. Golfers might be driven to buy a home in this community, as the three local courses are all within walking distance and offer different experiences. The San Francisco Golf Club and The Olympic Club are both private facilities. Situated next to Lake Merced Park, TPC Harding Park has a nine-hole course and an 18-hole course that is a stop on the PGA Tour. Lake Merced Park covers 750 acres of land and water, offering hiking among old-growth pines, a paved trail for biking and various fishing spots. Fort Funston is a National Park overlooking the beach where locals ride horses and hike. It’s also one of the most popular places in the country to go hang-gliding.
Nearby eateries and mall provide cuisine and shopping variety
According to Eater Magazine, Beep’s Burgers in next-door Ingleside is the best $7 hamburger in the Bay Area. Stonestown Galleria is a shopping mall just across the street from San Francisco University, where residents of Southshore will find a Whole Foods Supermarket, a Shake Shack and Regal Cinemas. One of Eater’s 38 Essential Restaurants in San Francisco is in the Sunset District, adjacent to Southshore on the north. Old Mandarin Islamic Restaurant is an institution in San Francisco that has had a long tenure as one of the only eateries specializing in Chinese Muslim cuisine.
A-rated San Francisco public schools serve area students
Southshore is in the San Francisco Unified School District. Lakeshore Alternative Elementary School receives a B from Niche and offers a Mandarin language after-school program. Aptos Middle School received an A-minus, and Lowell High School is ranked the best magnet school in the Bay Area and receives an A-plus. There are also several private schools nearby.
Interstate 280 and the BART help with commuter routes
Southshore is a 30-minute drive from Union Square in San Francisco. Residents can connect to Interstate 280 via Ocean Avenue. The Daly City stop on the Bay Area Rapid Transit train system is in the southwest corner of Southshore.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
