Telegraph Hill
Eclectic condos from a variety of architectural styles
Most homes were constructed anywhere from the early 1900s to today, and architectural styles reflect the many changes in home design through the decades. The neighborhood has an eclectic mix of gabled, ornate and modern stylings that take inspiration from Gothic Revival, Craftsman, Edwardian and Second Empire designs. According to Mitchell, homes here are more expensive than in other neighborhoods of San Francisco. “Between the views, history and amenities–it’s become an exclusive area,” Mitchell says. Single-family homes range from $1.2 million to $2 million. Condos range from about $750,000 for a small 800-square-foot condo to $2.3 million for a 2,800-square-foot condo with views of the bay and the surrounding city.Fresco mural parks and Coit Tower
Pioneer Park is located in the center of Telegraph Hill, a hilltop park known for its panoramic city and bay views. It features garden areas, open green spaces and the city’s iconic Coit Tower. “Coit Tower is one of the most famous San Francisco landmarks,” says Mitchell. Constructed in 1933, the Art Deco-style tower offers magnificent views of the city and also includes a series of WPA-era fresco murals. On the lower side of the park, exotic green parrots line the Filbert Steps in the garden area. These birds are actually native to Ecuador, and no one's quite sure how they got here, but they’ve been among the neighborhood’s most famous residents since 1911. “I’ve seen the parrots quite a few times on my balcony, and they’re always a welcome sight,” Mitchell says. The neighborhood is also not far from the bay, less than a few miles north. Here are places like Pier 39, a bayside pier offering scenic views of the water. It’s also a popular spot for checking out the many sea lions hanging on the pier’s docks.Next to Little Italy for restaurants and boutiques
Neighborhood grocers include RJ’s Market, featuring small grocery staples from deli meats to cheeses, while a Trader Joe’s is 3 miles away for more grocery items. Nearby shopping is located along Columbus Avenue, less than a few miles away. It’s lined with retail stores, boutiques and popular longstanding shops like the independent City Lights Booksellers & Publishers, which has been open since 1953. “There’s also a ton of bars and restaurants in the area,” says Mitchell. For dining out, there's Fog City, a modern American restaurant with bay views and The Baked Bear, a dessert restaurant that specializes in ice cream sandwiches. Telegraph Hill also has some Little Italy favorites, including Golden Boy Pizza for Sicilian-style slices and The Stinking Rose, a local favorite for Italian food.Nearby shows in Chinatown and annual San Francisco events
Telegraph Hill is less than a mile from Chinatown, where residents can enjoy a cultural lineup of shows throughout the year at the Great Star Theater. Nearby, the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco offers rotating art installations and often hosts community events. The neighborhood is also walkable to some of the city’s biggest annual events, including San Francisco’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and San Francisco Pride. Oracle Park is less than two miles away for checking out a San Francisco Giants baseball game, but the park is also home to big-time concerts throughout the year.Next to Interstate 80 and BART Stations
Telegraph Hill is a walkable area, but U.S. Route 101 and Interstate 80 are nearby for convenient access throughout San Francisco and neighboring cities. “You’re not car-dependent, though,” says Mitchell. “There are lots of public transportation options, with multiple ways to get downtown." These options include Muni, public bus stops and the Embarcadero BART Station, less than a mile east of Telegraph Hill. The Saint Francis Memorial Hospital is about 2 miles away, and San Francisco International Airport is 15 miles south.Public schools with dual enrollment classes
Students may attend Garfield Elementary School, which gets an A-minus-rating from Niche, followed by the B-plus-rated Francisco Middle School. Ida B. Wells High School is rated at a B-minus and has dual enrollment courses and a popular culinary arts program.
