Loma Linda
Mix of condos, duplexes and single-family homes
Almost two-thirds of Loma Linda residences are apartments. Condos, townhouses and rental units can be found on both sides of Saratoga Avenue, which runs diagonally through the neighborhood. Most condos come with access to outdoor pools included in homeowners association fees, and home prices range from $515,000 to $850,000, depending on size. Townhouses cost between $985,000 and $1.4 million, and multifamily homes typically range from $1.6 to $1.8 million, but can reach up to $2.5 million. Along with two-car garages in the front, duplexes come with compact backyards big enough for a cozy patio and fences connecting neighbors on all three sides. The western half of Loma Linda – approaching the Stevens Creek Central shopping mall – contains roundabouts, larger lawns and single-family homes. Single-story ranch-style houses and two-story saltboxes range from $1.4 to $2.6 million. Located just a few feet from each other, these houses also have attached garages and fenced-in backyards with a bit more space than a duplex.
Shopping at Safeway and dining at Demiya
Locals live about half a mile from Stevens Creek Boulevard, lined with retailers, restaurants, car dealerships and office buildings. Shoppers can head to Walmart or the Villa Shopping Center to browse Safeway, Marshalls and World Market. This commercial area includes plenty of restaurants, including Bill’s Café, a beloved city chain. “Bill’s is a really popular restaurant,” says Meunier. “Everyone loves their breakfast.” While there are several American-style restaurants, like Angry Chickz, famous for its Nashville Hot Chicken, many other restaurants bring global flavors, providing locals with a multi-cultural dining experience. Naan & Curry offers a taste of India, Demiya infuses curry with its Japanese dishes and Dumpling Capital serves up Chinese dumplings. Another commercial center sits on the other side of Interstate 280, containing an office park and Coffee & Water Lab, a minimalist coffee shop.Braving the Winchester Mystery House
Tours of the Winchester Mystery House are just a few streets away. This historic landmark was owned by the wife of the inventor of the Winchester rifle. She designed it to be intentionally mysterious: hallways and staircases lead to dead ends to ward off paranormal spirits supposedly haunting the labyrinthine mansion. For outings that are a little less spooky, the Cypress Community and Senior Center hosts ballroom dancing, free lunches on weekdays and a Mexican Independence Day celebration.A-rated public and private schools
Students may begin their studies at Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary before advancing to Warren Hyde Middle School; both are rated A-minus on Niche. Cupertino High, rated A-plus, partners with De Anza College to offer a dual enrollment program. Alternatively, the Harker School is in the neighborhood. This A-plus-rated K-12 school is one of many private institutions in the area. “I see a lot of people move to the neighborhood because of the schools,” says Meunier. “Cupertino schools have a solid reputation.”Recreation and relaxation at John Mise Park
While there are no public parks within Loma Linda, John Mise Park is directly on the other side of Interstate 280. Its all-purpose athletic field hosts soccer, baseball and flag football games through local leagues. Off the field, kids can play on the playground and the open grass, and the park also contains basketball and pickleball courts surrounded by walking paths. The pavilion gives people a place to have get-togethers for special occasions, complete with picnic tables and grills. However, when spending time outdoors, locals should be aware of the air quality in the Bay Area. It can suffer because of particle pollution year-round and occasional wildfire smoke.Driving 8 miles to downtown San Jose
Loma Linda borders Interstate 280, which leads about 8 miles east to San Jose Mineta International Airport and downtown San Jose. Valley Transportation Authority buses stop along Stevens Creek Boulevard, taking passengers throughout the city. Loma Linda also includes Lawrence Expressway, Saratoga Avenue and San Tomas Expressway; it can get noisy along these main roads. The neighborhood is about 2 miles from Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center.
