Shadow Brook II
Neighborhood in San Jose, California

Leafy streets with homes built in the late 1960s and ‘70s
Homes in Shadow Brook II were largely built in the late 1960s and ‘70s during the Almaden Valley construction boom. Split-level and ranch styles are the most common home designs here, with two-car garages, covered porches and landscaped front lawns. Many homes have peek-a-boo views of the hills and mountains on either side of the valley. “You get a great view of Mount Umunhum, that’s the tallest mountain out there, and it’s got an old air force base building at the top,” Tenczar says. Prices are at the upper end for San Jose, ranging between $2 million and $2.5 million. Safety is also part of the neighborhood’s appeal. It gets a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to 4 nationally.Students walk to some of San Jose’s top-rated public schools
Shadow Brook II residents are walking distance from three of San Jose’s best-rated public schools. Students start at Graystone Elementary, which gets an A-minus rating from Niche and received the California Distinguished Schools Award in 2023. For grades six through eight, students can attend A-minus-rated Bret Harte Middle. The final four years are spent at Leland High School, a sought-after STEM school with an A rating. Niche ranks it among the top 50 high schools in California for college prep.Community parks, pools and a creek-side trail
Greystone Park, within walking distance for most residents, is a popular community park with a playground, ballfields and shady groves of trees where people can picnic. It’s just across the street from the Los Alamitos Creek Trail, a 5-mile path that skirts Alamitos Creek and connects with several other nearby parks. In the summertime, Shadow Brook Swim Club draws crowds of visitors to its outdoor swimming pool and clubhouse. “The club is the central spot for the community. There’s a swim team. There are holiday events. The Fourth of July Parade every year is huge,” Tenczar says. For more outdoor adventuring, trailheads for Santa Teresa County Park and Almaden Quicksilver County Park are within a few miles.Shadow Brook II has as small shopping strip with a handful of restaurants
Almaden Via Valiente Plaza is within the neighborhood. It has a CVS pharmacy, a few shops and a handful of local restaurants. Residents can grab a table on the patio at La Terraza Grill & Bar, a festive Colombian restaurant, or pick up a pie from Pomodoro Pizza. Grocery and big box chains are found about 4 miles away at Almaden Plaza. It’s a large shopping district with a Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Costco and Walmart.Getting around Almaden Valley and beyond
The neighborhood is at the southern edge of the Almaden Valley, and commuting can be a hassle. It’s about 12 miles to Downtown San Jose and between around 25 miles to Silicon Valley cities like Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Cupertino. There is one bus line that serves Almaden Valley, with stops a few miles away from the neighborhood on Camden Avenue. Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center is the nearest hospital, about 8 miles away.Shadow Brook II is at risk for wildfires and flooding
Its proximity to the mountains puts the neighborhood at an increased risk for wildfires. To help protect residents from fires, Santa Clara County created a Community Wildfire Protection Plan in 2016 to further address safety in fire-prone areas. Some parts the neighborhood is in a flood zone because of its proximity to Alamitos Creek.
