The neighborhood’s wide and clean streetscapes feature well-paved sidewalks, providing a safe route for walking around the community. Properties sit closer together, displaying modest, well-landscaped front lawns. The homes are fairly uniform and were built with a planned design aesthetic, showcasing contemporary homes with Spanish Revival stylings and influences. Several housing layouts have been developed over the years, from midsize options, offering around 1400 square feet of space, to larger set-ups at about 2800 square feet. Home prices typically range from $850,000 to $1.5 million, depending on these square footage levels.Surrounded by local eateries and shopping centers
Although Cherrywood is strictly residential, there are dining and shopping options just outside of the neighborhood. Nearby Fifth Wheel is a San Leandro institution. Initially opened in 1946, the eatery used to serve truckers when San Leandro Boulevard was a main highway. It continues to serve American-style comfort food in a small, welcoming space. Downtown is less than a mile away for some of the city’s top dining and shopping. “They have a very cute downtown here with a lot to offer,” says Rudy Gonzales, a local Realtor with Red Oak Realty, who has lived in the Bay Area for over 20 years. Highly rated spots include Sons of Liberty Alehouse and Paradiso, an award-winning Italian restaurant known for its global fare and international wines. Next door is Top Hatters Kitchen and Bar, a trendy hotspot with elevated American cuisine. Downtown’s San Leandro Plaza shopping center has a Safeway for groceries, while Marina Square Center is a few miles south with big retail chains like Nike and Nordstrom Rack. The Gate 510 shopping mall is a few blocks west, featuring convenient big box stores such as Walmart and Home Depot.Community events in downtown San Leandro
The San Leandro Cherry Festival is the longest-standing city event, taking place in June. It features cherry-themed festivities, including a pie-baking and pie-eating contest and a classic car show. The September annual (Re)Discover Downtown event has live music, a scavenger hunt and a Maker’s Market featuring handmade goods and art.Neighborhood parks and nearby bay and lake trails
Cherrywood Park is within walking distance of the neighborhood. It sits on four acres and features open green spaces, modern play structures, picnic tables and tennis courts. Siempre Verde Park is less than a mile east, featuring enclosed play areas, basketball courts and a small, looped walking path. The expansive Chabot Regional Park is a few miles east, which includes hiking and biking trails surrounding Chabot Lake and the 36-hole Chabot Lake Golf Course. The Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline is a few miles west, with more hiking trails along the bay that lead to scenic vistas. This waterfront site is also known for being a popular birdwatching destination.Public schools with dual enrollment classes
Students may attend Halkin Elementary School, which gets a B rating from Niche. The school was once called Woodrow Wilson Elementary but was renamed in 2022 to honor the area's Indigenous people.
