Community of resilience after tragic wildfire
The epic tale of Fountaingrove blends a religious commune, tragedy, reinvention and, because it's Sonoma County, top-notch wine. Set in the steep Mayacamas hills, just east of US 101, Fountaingrove is one of northern Santa Rosa’s most desirable neighborhoods. Once home to the Brotherhood of New Life, a utopian community founded in 1875 by charismatic mystic Thomas Lake Harris, and the Brotherhood's Fountaingrove winery, the area is now a neighborhood with a mix of upscale homes and epic valley and golf course views. Residential development of the area started in the late 1950s, with elegant ranch-style homes perched on tree-studded hillside terraces. The Brotherhood’s aptly named Round Barn was a neighborhood icon until October 8, 2017, when the Tubbs Wildfire forever altered the Fountaingrove landscape. Many homes, mature trees and gardens were lost. However, rebuilding and replanting have been ongoing ever since. "Fountaingrove really came back strong after the fire," says Jeff Schween, a top-selling Santa Rosa-area Realtor with Compass Real Estate, who has been selling property for over 30 years. "As devastating as the fire was, the area kind of got a new lease on life with the rebuilding that's occurred. Now there's an eclectic mix of custom homes that create a new atmosphere. And the Fountaingrove Club, which was old and in need of repair before, has been rebuilt and redesigned. It's stunning. It has a real midcentury vibe - you almost expect to see Sinatra and the Rat Pack hanging out there."

Luxurious private golf course and a 33-acre park
At the heart of the neighborhood is the private, member-owned Fountaingrove Club with its stunning 18-hole golf course, a soft blanket of gently rolling emerald green with stunning views of Fountaingrove Lake and the surrounding hills. Area residents are into fitness and being outdoors, and with the area's low crime score - a two out of 10 - they can explore their surroundings with confidence. Vineyard manager Allison Bettis regularly ventures here from her home in the nearby Junior College neighborhood to walk Fountaingrove’s steep sidewalks and paths overlooking the golf course and throughout the 33-acre Nagasawa Park. “This place is a Santa Rosa rarity,” Bettis says, “because it's one of the few hillside neighborhoods where you can walk safely apart from cars. And these hills will really get you a workout. There are always people out walking and tooling around in golf carts, and everyone smiles and says hi. Walking around here kind of makes me feel like I’m on vacation.”

Nearby grocery stores, coffee shops and farmers market
Groceries are found down the hill - but still nearby - at Lucky, Safeway and Trader Joe’s; and Bottle Barn is, as any Santa Rosan will declare, the hands-down most comprehensive wine shop in the city. Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii or cozy Blue Beagle Coffee is a great way to start the day. For upscale nightlife, there's the Vintner’s Resort, a spa hotel set amid a working vineyard, where patrons can linger over a farm-to-table dinner on John Ash & Co.'s fairy-lit patio or sip cocktails in the gleaming oak-paneled Front Room Bar. Fountaingrove is within a few minutes drive of the Luther Burbank Center of the Arts, Santa Rosa’s largest performing venue, where visitors can enjoy a global array of musical, dance, theatrical and comedy performances. On Saturday mornings, residents can browse the wares of over 50 vendors at the county's largest farmers market, which is held in the Burbank Center’s parking lot.
