East Elliott
Neighborhood in Santee, California
San Diego County 92071
Planned suburban living
East Elliott consists of two suburban communities: Carlton Oaks to the south of Mast Boulevard and Weston to the north. Carlton Oaks is the more established of the two, mainly developed in the 1960s. Residents enjoy walkability to community parks and Carlton Oaks Country Club on the community’s south end. The neighborhood’s schools are also nestled within Carlton Oaks’ residential streets. Its drives and cul-de-sacs are lined with 1960s ranch-style and 1980s Mediterranean-influenced homes on midsize grassy lawns. Many have been remodeled with modern interiors and pool patios, and outfitted with energy-efficient solar panels. These range from $700,000 to over $1 million. Weston has a narrow layout of a few main drives extending north from Mast Boulevard. It has a community park and pool, as well as direct access to Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve. Most of its ranch-style and Mediterranean-influenced homes were built in the 1970s and can cost $800,000 to $1 million. Weston has seen quite a bit of recent development since 2019, with larger contemporary homes sporting Mediterranean-style stucco exteriors ranging from $1 million to $1.5 million.Santee Lakes Preserve and hiking in the foothills
The suburbs are sandwiched by outdoor activity, with Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve on the east and miles of open space to the west. Santee Lakes consists of a string of small lakes that were developed into a recreation area alongside the development of Santee’s suburbs in the 1960s. The lakes are lined with paved walking paths, and the grassy land bridges in between are home to gazebos, playgrounds and fishing piers. Walking paths even extend to small islands on the lakes with playgrounds and picnic areas. Hikers can explore miles of foothills and wildflower meadows north and west of the suburbs. The Mission Gorge Trail is the nearest trailhead for hiking through Mission Trails Regional Park on the neighborhood’s west side. The hills to the north of Mast Boulevard have trails that are walkable from many homes. Santee Boulders is a popular nearby stop on these trails. It’s a collection of giant natural boulder formations that offer a challenge for rock climbers or a photo op for casual hikers. Residents also enjoy community parks and pools within the suburbs. Many belong to Carlton Oaks Country Club, which is part of the Carlton Oaks community. It has an 18-hole golf course, a clubhouse and a pool. But the club is a draw for everyone, not just athletes. “We go to the country club for events and live music all the time; it’s not all about the golf,” adds Taylor.Walk to schools in the heart of the community
Most neighborhood students have a short walk to schools located in the community. Kids may go to the Carlton Oaks School for kindergarten through eighth grade, earning a B-plus from Niche. Carlton Oaks is part of the B-rated Santee School District. They finish across the road at West Hills High School, given an A. West Hills boasts a sprawling open-air campus with courtyards between buildings and extensive athletic facilities, including a blue-turf football field. It’s part of the Grossmont Union High School District, graded an A.Access to multiple freeways
“San Diego is a big military center, but out here, people do all kinds of things, which is why I always emphasize the freeway access,” says Taylor. Multiple freeways run by the neighborhood, allowing residents to commute all over San Diego County. Highway 52 runs east to west below the neighborhood, giving residents an 8-mile drive west to Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center and an 11-mile trip to Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Highway 125 can take commuters 17 miles southwest into downtown San Diego. It also connects to Interstate 8 for longer drives east and west. The San Diego Light Rail is accessible at Santee Town Center Station, 2 miles from many homes. It offers just over an hour ride to downtown. Flights at San Diego International Airport are 20 miles southwest.Risk of wildfires
The grassy area west of the neighborhood suburbs is labeled as a very high fire hazard zone. This already high risk, combined with the increasing presence of wildfires in Southern California, means that residents should take measures to prevent and prepare for fires. Homeowners in these high-risk areas are required to remove and mitigate the growth of dry, flammable brush around their property to prevent fires from spreading into residential areas. It’s most important to have an established evacuation plan in preparation for a fire. Two miles from Santee’s town center
Residents can do almost all their shopping in Santee’s town center, just a couple miles from most homes. Multiple large retail plazas are positioned around the intersection of Mission Gorge Road and Cuyamaca Street. They have department stores like Target and Walmart, grocers like Vons and Trader Joe’s, DIY supplies at Home Depot, and big-box shopping at Costco. The town center also has many fast-casual and chain restaurants. Local eateries can be found closer to the neighborhood. Janet’s Café & Deli is just over a mile away on Carlton Oaks Drive. Janet's has outdoor patio seating and serves classic diner food all day, with homemade pies for dessert. Across the street, Estrada’s serves authentic Mexican plates, including tacos, burritos and ceviche.Crime
Part of East Elliott’s suburban appeal is its relatively low crime. The neighborhood has an overall CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, compared to the U.S. average of 4.
