Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools and schools of choice
School-age children may attend Shuman Elementary and Hubert Middle schools, which both earned C-minus grades from Niche. Older students may attend Johnson High School, which earned a C and was named a 2022 School of Excellence by ACT’s American College Application Campaign. The program honored just 23 schools nationally that are helping students pursue postsecondary success. High schoolers may also attend Savannah Arts Academy, an A-plus-rated arts school that offers majors in film studies, theatre, visual arts, dance and several music programs. The school is public but requires an academic screening and audition for acceptance.

It’s definitely funky and more artistic,” Oxnard says. For delicious soul food, locals swing by Sisters of the New South, a family-owned restaurant serving Southern classics like fried chicken, barbecue ribs and smothered shrimp and grits with sides like okra and collard greens. At Geneva’s Famous Chicken and Cornbread, locals enjoy soul food with a kick, with dishes like shrimp po’boys and Cajun fried turkey wings. Avondale residents shop along Victory Drive and Wallin Street in Victory Heights. Local artists and entrepreneurs sell their wares at VENDORS ON VICTORY, and residents can also find big box stores like Target and Whole Foods for everyday essentials.
