Pike Place Market: the soul of Seattle

When visitors come to Seattle, the world-famous Pike Place Market is often on their checklist. From the fish flying about at Pike Place Fish Market to the location of the first-ever Starbucks to the oddity that is a 50-foot-long wall of chewed gum known as The Gum Wall, the neighborhood has a feel that is Seattle to the core. But this isn’t just a place for tourists to get a quick glimpse of The Emerald City. Many Seattle residents choose to make the Pike Place Market neighborhood their home for the same reason visitors flock here – there is no place quite like it. From the vibes to the views of Elliot Bay, “Pike Place Market feels very Seattle,” says Brooke Kavieff, a Seattle-area real estate broker.

A diverse array of local shopping and dining options

Pike Place Market has been a Seattle staple since its founding in 1907. Photogenic fishmongers fling fresh catches, while florists offer shoppers a far more pleasant bouquet of scents elsewhere in the marketplace. Neighborhood residents also take advantage of a wide array of fresh produce options. Shoppers can find just about anything they can think of in this maze of century-old shops and stalls, from bookstores like BLMF Literary Saloon to art and jewelry shops like Raven’s Nest Treasure. “You can get anything from incense to vitamins to fresh fish. It’s very eclectic,” says James Stroupe, founding director of Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty. Dining options are plentiful in and around the Market. Piroshky Piroshky is a Russian bakery offering more than 20 varieties of traditional stuffed baked buns both savory and sweet. The Pink Door is one of Seattle’s most unique dining options – an upscale Italian restaurant with live burlesque and trapeze shows. Beecher’s Handmade Cheese brings a crowd for its mac and cheese. And, of course, there are restaurants serving locally caught seafood along this waterfront stretch. Lowell’s Restaurant uses three floors to take advantage of Elliot Bay’s views while serving seafood dishes from breakfast until dinner. Pike Place Market is a vibrant neighborhood for nightlife. Brewpubs like Pike Brewing Company and Seattle Beer Co. are located here. There is also a unique mix of bars and pubs, such as Brit-inspired White Horse Tavern and eclectic cocktail bar Radiator Whiskey, which serves unique meat dishes like fried pig ears. And the neighborhood that birthed Starbucks is naturally home to coffee shops on nearly every corner.

Luxury condos with Elliot Bay views

The 2019 demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct – a double-decker highway moved underground – has increased the demand to live in the neighborhood now that condos offer an unobstructed view of Elliot Bay. “It was a million-dollar view only when people drove their car,” Stroupe said. That has changed, and the price tag for condos located in modern high-rises reflects that. Condos have sold from $325,000 to $4,450,000 with a median price of $729,000.

Top Seattle performance venues nearby

Iconic performance venues abound in and around the neighborhood. Fictional 1990s Seattleites Frasier and Niles Crane would have been regulars at Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Real 1990s Seattleites Pearl Jam are among the many artists to perform at Moore Theatre, which opened the same year as Pike Place Market. The Triple Door is a popular dinner theatre in the neighborhood.

Park renovation project reclaiming waterfront

Pike Place Market’s parks are a work in progress as land is reclaimed from the removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Victor Steinbreuck Park will reopen in 2024 after a two-year renovation. Pier 58 is being redesigned as a 20-acre park scheduled to be completed in 2025. But there are still family-friendly places to visit while the parks get their facelifts. Seattle Aquarium, the nation’s ninth-largest in annual attendance, is adjacent to the neighborhood along with The Great Seattle Wheel. The Original Selfie Museum is another quirky spot where the visitors themselves become the exhibit.

All of Seattle is accessible

The neighborhood rates 99 out of 100 in walkability and a perfect 100 in transit score. Easy access to Interstate 5 also makes the rest of Seattle easy to reach. “Everything is within 15 minutes driving,” Kavieff says. “It’s a great location for being able to explore other neighborhoods as well.” That convenience includes getting to Seattle Kraken hockey games at Climate Pledge Arena – 1 mile to the north – or Seahawks football and Mariners baseball games at Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park, both 1 mile to the south.

Pike Place Market zoned for top Seattle schools

Although many condos aren’t exactly family-sized spaces, children living in the neighborhood are in proximity to some of Seattle’s top-rated schools. Students in Pike Place Market are zoned to attend Lowell Elementary in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Lowell receives a B-rating from Niche. Meany Middle School, in the Stevens neighborhood, has an A-minus rating. And high schoolers are zoned to attend Garfield High School, an A-rated school located in the Mann neighborhood.
