"The houses are all fairly large and well-constructed," says Walters. “No two houses are alike, or cookie-cutter. It doesn't feel like a subdivision. Each house has its own character." Oak View's development began in the 1960s and continues to expand even today, with lots still available for sale on the neighborhood's northern end. Homes here are typically single-family, although there are some townhouses and condo options too. Most homes feature ranch-style or new traditional architecture with a mix of vinyl, brick and stone facades. Oak View has three parks within the neighborhood: Kenny Anderson Park, Oak View Park and Linwood Park. Summer Saturdays are spent at Kenny Anderson Park, where kids play softball while their siblings explore its large playground and parents prepare picnics at the pavilion. Oak View Park is an open field with native plants, where one might bring a picnic blanket and a book to read or watch the clouds pass by. Students in Oak View attend Anne Sullivan Elementary School, which has a B-minus on Niche, followed by Whittier Middle School, which has a grade of C-plus. Whittier Middle School has recently approved a site location for its new campus, which will replace its current 100-year-old building. According to Jeff Kreiter, Operational Services Director at the Sioux Falls School District, students will continue to attend classes at the school's current building until the completion of the new campus in 2030. After Whittier, students attend Washington High School, which has an A-minus and ranks as the eighth-best public high school in South Dakota on Niche. The neighborhood's Kenny Anderson Community Center is a Sioux Falls School District Community Learning Center, providing after-school and summer enrichment programs that allow kids to explore interests like sports, dance and STEM. Oak View is a car-dependent neighborhood 3 miles east of downtown Sioux Falls. Most errands can be done within the neighborhood, and getting downtown takes about 10 minutes when driving or roughly 20 minutes by bike or the Sioux Area Metro bus. For all the daily essentials, locals head to 10th Street. Hy-Vee is where most get their groceries, and Runnings is where residents go to pick-up home and yard maintenance equipment.
