High community activism in one of Indianapolis's "excluded cities"
Southport has carved out a unique identity within the south Indianapolis area. In 1969, it opted to be its own self-governing entity even as the city and county consolidated governments. This small but mighty community of 2,100 residents lives up to its motto, "a community for life." Volunteer-run organizations work to uplift the residents of Southport, whether raising money for the local police department or driving older residents to healthcare appointments. Community spirit shines the brightest at several city-sponsored events each year. Southport is known in part for the nineteenth-century homes that make up the north end. Yet the town aims to usher in the next generation of homeowners, with help in part from an $18 million dollar apartment project.

Southport Park is the go-to green space
Southport supports fresh air and fun activities with its own community park. Southport Park, located on the north end of town, is the go-to area for green space. It provides a space for exercise with a full-sized basketball court and a baseball diamond. Kids can reach great heights on the swings or the sky-high twisty slide. The shelter is big enough for a party or family picnic. Southport Park doubles as a venue for most of the city's events, from the Independence Celebration to Santa in the Park. Perry Senior Services supports the area's older residents through door-to-door transit to medical appointments. It also promotes health and wellness with social activities and group exercise classes.
