Bemiss
Railroad-era cottages and bungalows
Many of the cottages and bungalows that line Bemiss’ streets date back to when the neighborhood was first developed in the early 20th century. “Much like this whole area, there's a little bit of everything sprinkled in,” Muglia says. “Craftsman and bungalow houses abound from the railroad era. And there are brand new modern architecture houses with 1920s Craftsman features. It’s a mark of history.” Most homes in the neighborhood list for $250,000 to $400,000. Residents enjoy large back decks for entertaining and spacious yards with garden beds, some even coming with small greenhouses. Many Bemiss homes have detached garages and covered front porches.Rogers High’s historic Art Deco design
Most neighborhood kids attend local public schools, which are overseen by the Spokane Public School District. Bemiss Elementary has a B-minus grade on Niche and runs a popular Active4Youth program, which meets in Hays Park to provide fun competitions for kids. Shaw Middle School has a C grade and shares space with the Spokane Public Library’s Hillyard branch, which offers after-school programming for students. Rogers High has a B-minus grade and is known for its Art Deco architecture, which has landed it on the National Register of Historic Places.Hays Park and Andrew Rypien Field
The 9-acre Hays Park features a popular playground, and plans are underway for ungraded benches, LED lighting, a paved pathway and a new trail planted with trees and edible flowers. The park hosts the popular Music Under the Oaks series every summer, where local and regional bands perform, giant bubble wands are given to kids and in the past, they’ve had drone and instrument-making demos. Former NFL quarterback and Spokane resident Mark Rypien is the reason Andrew Rypien Field came to life. “There was this area in Bemiss that needed some TLC, and he came in with some other community sponsors and created Rypien field,” Muglia says. “It’s been a great space for kids’ sports team to come out.” Named after his son, the space was formerly a car and appliance junkyard.Market Street shops and restaurants
While Bemiss is primarily residential, the neighborhood is less than a mile from Hillyard’s retail corridor, which centers around Market Street and features a unique combination of old-school thrift shops and vibrant eateries, along with the neighborhood Safeway supermarket. "You're basically right next door to Hillyard," says Realtor Cody Snow of Keller Williams Spokane, "which has got the best antique shops in town, not to mention some great restaurants." Those looking for major department stores and chain retailers can head to Division Street and Northtown Mall, located just 2 miles west of Bemiss. As for local dining options, the stretch of Market Street that forms the neighborhood's east border is home to a couple of the most popular restaurants in town, including highly-rated Rincon Taptio and the iconic Knight’s Diner. The historic 1906 train car restaurant is known for its silver dollar pancakes.Getting Downtown
Major thoroughfares such as North Division Street and North Nevada Street provide easy access to and from Bemiss, connecting residents to Downtown Spokane, which is 4 miles away by car. Public transportation is readily available, with multiple bus routes running along Market Street and Empire Avenue. Cycling is an increasingly popular method of commuting in the neighborhood, particularly via the Centennial Bike Trail, which runs along the southern edge of the neighborhood.Bemiss community events
As a close community, Bemiss has an active council that hosts regular potlucks, neighborhood cleanups, annual holiday shows and National Night Out block parties. Muglia says there’s a big push for community gardens, so council members have brought in non-profit, Growing Neighbors. “They’ve helped people utilize their yards for growing gardens again,” she says. “It’s a great concept, and the main push was to help those in need have access to more food.”
