Minnehaha, where suburban Spokane life blends with nature

The neighborhood of Minnehaha stretches along the Spokane River, bordered by hiking trails, golf courses and climber-friendly rock formations high in the Spokane River Valley. Beyond its wealth of parks and recreation areas, Minnehaha also stands out for its mix of comparatively affordable older homes and newly constructed houses. With the trendy, historic Hillyard Creative District next door and Downtown Spokane less than 15 minutes away, it's just as easy to take tranquil hikes and bike rides as it is to reach Spokane ’s cultural and commuter centers.

Old homes and new construction in northeast Spokane

“One of the positives about Minnehaha is that it’s a mix of older, vintage homes and quite a bit of new construction,” says Kelli Johnson, a broker with Home Sales Spokane, who’s served Washington and Idaho for more than 16 years. Most of the neighborhood is made up of suburban blocks and curving cul-de-sacs, lined by prewar houses like bungalows or midcentury construction such as ranch-style homes. Houses built since the 2000s usually cluster on the neighborhood’s east side, whether they’re in townhouse communities or in subdivisions of detached New Traditional homes.

Move-in-ready older homes sell from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$400,000s, while fixer-uppers can go in the $100,000s. Newly constructed townhomes sell in the $300,000s. Detached New Traditional homes built since the 2000s sell from the mid-$300,000s to the mid-$500,000s. Minnehaha has a median single-family home price in the lower $300,000s. That’s higher than neighboring Bemiss and Hillyard.

Driving, taking buses or biking around Spokane

Sidewalks connect some neighborhood streets, and Spokane Transit Authority bus routes line a couple of main roads. Still, most residents of Minnehaha rely on cars to get around Spokane. Downtown is about 5 miles away, and Gonzaga University is only 3 miles from home for students and commuters. The Centennial Trail snakes along the Spokane River, a popular biking and jogging path that also offers access to downtown’s entertainment and employment hubs.

Packed with parks and trails in the Spokane River Valley

Up high in the Spokane River Valley’s wooded hillsides and winding along the waterfront, Minnehaha’s green spaces offer plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors. Locals love:

  • Minnehaha Park, a forested area with hiking trails, a playground and athletic facilities
  • Esmeralda Golf Course, a public 18-hole golf course
  • John H. Shields Park, where you might start cycling on the Centennial Trail, hike or climb the Minnehaha Rocks
  • Beacon Hill, a wooded area full of rugged hiking and mountain biking trails

Attending Spokane Public Schools

Minnehaha is served by Spokane Public Schools. Within SPS, students can attend zoned neighborhood schools or apply to other schools through the district’s choice system. Cooper Elementary School is in Minnehaha and is walkable for many families.

Next to trendy businesses and restaurants in Hillyard

Minnehaha borders Hillyard, one of Spokane’s up-and-coming commercial and creative districts. “Market Street has developed a vibe of community,” Johnson says. “There are great coffee shops, restaurants, bars and places to explore.” Minutes from home, you’ll find favorites like:

  • Derailer Coffee, a cafe with an airy, modern vibe in a historic commercial building
  • Crazy Train Eatery, a cool spot in the same building as Derailer Coffee, specializing in burgers and sandwiches
  • Legacy Billiards Bar and Grill, where you can order pub grub and shoot pool with friends
  • Hillyard Bicycle, a pitstop for a rental bike, quick repair or new cycling accessories
  • Green’s Fresh Market, a family-owned grocer and deli counter

Taking care of parks and each other through Minnehaha’s council

Locals take pride in their shared spaces and sense of community in Minnehaha. The Minnehaha Neighborhood Council helps the community get together throughout the year by hosting events like a National Night Out movie screening and family-friendly festival. You can get involved by attending the council’s monthly meetings and volunteering at service park clean-ups.
