Living next door to Battlefield Mall

The Meador Park neighborhood sits steps away from the popular Battlefield Mall, Meador Park and Mercy Hospital Springfield. “People are moving in because our cost of living is still low, so we’re seeing a lot of growth,” says Amy Hunsaker-Williams, an experienced Realtor with The Collective Real Estate-Keller Williams. Residents stay active by visiting Meador Park for some outdoor fun or to watch Drury University athletes practice on the baseball field. Locals also improve their green thumb with the volunteer community garden at Ray Kelly Park. Farm-fresh produce, fun in the sun and a shopping extravaganza are all just a short drive or walk away in Meador Park.

Shopping stores and local vendors at Battlefield Mall

Locals swing by the mall on Saturdays to see it transform into the Greater Springfield Farmers Market, where vendors sell fresh blueberries, local meat and decorated baked goods. For specialty groceries, shoppers journey to the other side of Meador Park to browse the Asian World Market. As Springfield’s largest Asian grocery store, shoppers can find anything from Thai chiles to Korean ribs. Food 4 Less, Aldi and Target also sit nearby when residents want more options.

Hungry shoppers can fuel up at The Grotto West Coast Grill with a classic burger or a made-to-order salad. Casa Bella Mexican Cuisine sees a crowd during lunchtime, and their large menu has something everyone can try. Those who love a good cheesesteak order at The Chicago Cheesesteak Company South.

Volunteer gardeners tend to the community garden at Ray Kelly Park while park guests get their steps in along the paved walking trail nearby. Volunteers share the fruit and vegetable bounty before donating extra produce to food pantries. Food from the garden also winds up at the neighboring South Side Senior Center, where retirees can take exercise classes before picking up ready-to-eat meals.

Meanwhile, Meador Park’s sports complex attracts numerous local teams and clubs. Springfield’s own Drury University uses the baseball stadium and softball fields for home games and practices. After school lets out at Cowden Elementary, parents can let their kids have fun in the sun on the Cowden Park playground equipment. For some quiet time indoors, readers of all ages visit the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch Library.

Brick homes near popular shopping

The park and mall, which AMAX Realtor Kirk Hewitt calls the centerpiece of Springfield shopping, are the neighborhood’s biggest draws for homebuyers. “It’s as hot as it gets right there. I had one listing around the corner on Woodland Street. It had 1,500 square feet on the main level, and it had half of that on the basement level, and still pulled roughly $245,000,” Hewitt says. Brick ranch homes and national homes with garages that stick out toward the street fill the neighborhood, and they often hit the market at $100,000 to $300,000. Older residents can also settle into the Holiday Cambridge retirement community or the Tera Vera 55-and-older community.
