West Springfield offers a vast rural escape
West Springfield is a large area made up of a great deal of open and gently rolling landscape. This area west of Springfield has a couple of unincorporated communities, a few million-dollar homes on spacious lands and a preserve with many Osage orange trees. “It’s rural, but it’s starting to be up-and-coming,” says Ashley Fay, the owner of Ashley Fay Crystals. “This is the only way that Springfield has left to expand, so it’s starting to build up a little more out this way.” In recent years, the community has seen the addition of new homes and the sale of many open lots. However, despite some growth, this area still draws those looking for extra space and privacy in the scenic Ozarks region. “I enjoy being a little bit out of town. It’s quieter, and it’s more peaceful out here,” Fay says.

The area has many ranch-style homes and farmhouses
Many homes here were built between the early 20th century and today and stand along quiet, two-lane country roads. While 5- to 10-acre lots are common, a few go well over 50 acres. Houses here include many ranch-style homes and farmhouses, including some high-end ones built after 2020. The community also has some luxury properties, including a stone chateau-style home in the Plano area. Several homes under 2,000 square feet sell from $120,000 to $300,000. Many larger homes, or ones on 5 acres or more, go from $330,000 to $640,000. A few homes on more than 100-acre lots run between $1.2 million and $3 million. Other properties include open lots that go from $70,000 to $500,000. West Springfield has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, putting it below the national average of 4.

Recreation includes biking, hiking and golf
Long-distance cyclists can ride on Missouri Route 266, which doubles as U.S. Bicycle Route 66. The portion of the bike route that passes through the community is part of a larger section that runs between St. Louis and the area near the Kansas and Missouri border. “And we’re on Route 66, so you get that old nostalgia part of it, too,” Fay says, referring to how the bike route follows the path of the historic and famous highway. Located in the heart of the community is the Bois D’Arc Conservation Area, which many visit for nature hikes and to bowhunt deer. In addition to deer, the conservation area’s wildlife includes quail, rabbit and wild turkeys. Golfers may go to the Greene Hills Country Club, which has a public 18-hole course.
